Favourite post-race pub?

AuthorDateMessage
Alan AylingJan 18 2025, 7:27pmSo what's everyone's favourite watering hole for post-race rehydration?

For my part, there are several gems... Zellers in Lackan (which we sadly don't get to use at the moment), O'Keeffes in Knockananna, the Man o' War after the Ardgillan race.... but top of the pile has to be O'Céallachairs in Kilfinnane. As far from chrome and TVs showing Sky Sports as you can get. And utterly magnificent pints of Murphys.
Mick HanneyJan 18 2025, 8:52pmThe Gap pub, scene of many a post Annagh hill race. A lovely spot on an IMRA race day or at the end of a nice training run. And its local which is a nice bonus for me.
Brian MullinsJan 18 2025, 9:08pmThere is but one. The highest pub in Ireland. Creedons The Top of Coom.
Kristen O'SullivanJan 18 2025, 10:19pmI have to say Mccarthy's bar in castletownbere. Hard to beat!
Brian KitsonJan 18 2025, 11:30pmFireside breakfast pints and a fry in The Glenmalure Lodge after an early Art O’Neill finish.
Conor MurphyJan 19 2025, 7:48amI'm a traditionalist, and based in Kerry, so obviously I'm going for the Climber's Inn, Glencar. Where some of the greats of mountain running over the decades have taken the applause for conquering the highest summits.

Any clarification on whether races are gone from the Reeks as Robbie Williams suggested, or we'll hold the World Championships there as Richard Nunan and Eoin Keith proposed? Thanks.
Alice ClancyJan 19 2025, 10:06amThe Blue Light in Dublin is a lovely spot post race…and the bbq at Old Head beach after Mweelrea has provided excellent rehydration opportunities in the past….but I have to say O'Céallachairs after the epic Ballyhouras is becoming a firm favourite!
Warren SwordsJan 19 2025, 12:23pmHave to agree with Kitson. Best pints you’ll ever have is Glenmalure Lodge after the Art O’Neill. Blazing fire, pints and a morning fry.
Mick HanneyJan 19 2025, 5:00pm+1 for the Glenmalure Lodge.

Also, technically if races go past a pub that should count. The Dyling Cow is one such gem, perhaps in need of a finish line.

We don't need another league but the good pub league sure sounds appealing.
Kevin LenihanJan 19 2025, 5:47pmO Ceallachairs in kilfinnane is hard to beat..The coach road pub in Aherlow after galtymor race was a belter. The halfway bar after gleannageenty is a nice one too!
Dara O'BrienJan 19 2025, 6:41pmI echo Mick Hanney’s words on the Dying Cow. Maybe not a finish line but a great place for a mid-race beef and pizza - myself and PJ Meehan made the most of the hospitality during last years Coast 2 Coast !!
Alan AylingJan 19 2025, 9:43pmHave to agree Mick, the Gap is great. I liked the Saltee too.

Some on here may remember the now long-closed Narin Inn. Technically not a post-race pub, but definitely home to some epic nights back in the early noughties when the Donegal weekend was a thing.

And yes Conor, the Climbers Inn is another fine spot. Even has a pulpit! Sadly I don't have any update as to when we might get back there.
David PowerJan 20 2025, 8:36amSitting outside Fenton's in the Glen of Imaal on a summer afternoon. The satisfaction of having ran up and down Lug, plain and simple. A recovery dip in the stream, then a creamy pint, some sambos, a salty bag of crisps shared over happy chatter. Everyone has a story to tell. The silence of the glen, not a sound to be had (note: I've never been there when the army were firing on the range..it might make us run faster)
Stuart ScottJan 20 2025, 9:15amIt's impossible to choose one, I like them all! And even last year when pubs were thin on the ground, the post-race cans and sangwiches were a perfect alternative. Two of the best things about IMRA, for me, are the post-race chats and the carpooling and I've gotten to know most of my friends this way. Long may it continue!
Eoin Mac MahonJan 20 2025, 3:09pmThere is an IMRA race going past The Climbers Inn in July. Bring Buckfast.
Brian KitsonJan 20 2025, 4:09pmOf course, for those who don’t want to wait “post race” for a tipple there is the Dublin Mountain Pubs Round which myself, Warren & Dave Gowan completed in 2023.

Merry Ploughboy- Johnny Foxes - Blue Light - Taylor's Tree Rock - Merry Ploughboy.

30km. One pint per pub.
Conor O'FarrellJan 21 2025, 11:44am@Brian. I wouldn’t be very concerned about the adherence to IMRA’s “leave no trace” policy for this specific event… if you catch my meaning. ;-)
Barry MurrayJan 21 2025, 12:01pmI'll have to nominate Lynhams ... great especially after the Brockagh and Trooperstown summer races , a dip in the river after and fresh Wicklow Wolfs on tap .

But O'Ceilleachairs in Kilfinnane is an absolute classic pub... perfect spot for the Munster AGM !
Richard NunanJan 23 2025, 10:50am+1 for the Murphys in Mccarthy's bar in Castletownbere !
Phil behanJan 23 2025, 2:28pm@brian Kitson. When do entries open for that race? I had 3 pints with Jo Boyle before the Ballyhoura Midnight Marathon in Healy's in Kilfinane, would that suffice for the entry criteria?
Brian KitsonJan 23 2025, 5:48pmstraight into the elite pen.
Warren SwordsJan 23 2025, 8:46pmWe usually (once) do it around June. There was talk of a winter round but we didn’t want to take away from the Wicklow round winter attempts and look like we were somehow making that look like the lesser achievement.

Plan it to do it again in 2025, more the merrier.
Rory CampbellJan 24 2025, 12:26pm+1 for Mccarthy's bar in Castletownbere !!! (worth every bit of the Beara race
pain)
