Annacurra Trail race

AuthorDateMessage
Mick HanneyJan 15 2025, 10:27amThis will be the first of this years trail league taking in a loop of the Roddenagh woods at Annacurra before a circuit of the hill.

Event details are updated in advance with a map if anyone wanted to do a recce at any stage. Happy to guide anyone around if they are interested.
Andy WalkerJan 16 2025, 11:08amHi Mick, I don't think I'll be able to make the race itself but if you are doing any recces or there's interest from other people to be guided round then I could be keen to come along for that instead...
Amanda FitzgeraldJan 19 2025, 9:24pmHi Mick will there be a Junior race available for the small kids? Thanks
Mick HanneyJan 19 2025, 9:49pmHi Amanda,

Currently short course is 5.7k which restricts it to M/F16s and above.
I am open to options to have a shorter option (again) to allow all juniors. For instance, 2 loops of Roddenagh woods would be about 4k. Happy to chat to see if this, or other options, might work. Would like to have this as inclusive as possible.

Regards,

Mick
Mick HanneyJan 19 2025, 10:19pm@Amanda I had forgotten that we can only have 2 courses - long or short - for official race results purposes there can only be 2 races. I'll look at what normally is supported at trail league races (juniors wise) and we can chat.

Cheers, Mick
Mick HanneyJan 20 2025, 9:05amThe details for the short course have been updated, now slightly shorter than originally proposed without compromising the fun bits.
Amanda FitzgeraldJan 20 2025, 9:30amHey Mick I see that it's been changed to suit juniors also. Thankyou for accommodating them especially when it's a local race for them. It's great to see more kids out at the races.
I did the long course last time and loved it. Great location and lots of variety. Looking forward to all the fun bits.
Thanks again
Mick HanneyFeb 4 2025, 3:30pmEarly request for help on this event for the usual things pls. First aid, laptop, and non-running volunteers, some of whom will be marshals on the day and others to help with reg and post race. If someone wants to take a walk in and get some races photos that would be a bonus. A couple of running volunteers to help with parking would be appreciated.. Volunteers make our events happen and we really appreciate the help.
Mick HanneyFeb 15 2025, 3:36pmThanks for the volunteers so far. 2 or 3 more ideally and we should be sorted.

If you haven't been to Annacurra before its a great IMRA race location. Registration, car park, start line and pub are all without touching distance. Use the IMRA car pool and/or car share with friends if you can.

NB: In a change to other IMRA races, the short course will start 15 mins before the main race. Also, there isn't an early start on the long course. This is due to the course which has lots of single track sections and trying to organise the flow of runners around the hill as best as possible.
Mick HanneyFeb 16 2025, 8:12pmShort Course Route Preview:-
1. Start and after 100m, a left turn uphill track to t-junction on fire-road (includes a road crossing that will be marshalled.
2.300m on fire road before single track climb thru forest for c 1k.
3.About 50m fire-road, to 'short course marshal'. Then left along a raised ditch for 200 or so meters.
4. Sharp feft, downhill single-tracks for c. 600m. A bit on fireroad then 1k downhill track to finish.

Distance 4.5k. c. 260m elevation.
Mick HanneyFeb 17 2025, 9:18pmLong Course Route Preview:-
1. A gentle start with a flat 1st k, and short climb, anti-clockwise around Roddenagh woods.
2. c.2k in you cross road (marshalled), single track, then short fire road section in higher woods.
3. Single track climb thru forest for 1k.
4. Turn right onto fire-road, Next 1.5k are gentle up then down on fire road.
5. Tricky single track climb leading to an off-piste section, climbing 94m in 1k.
6. A bit of fire road at the top before a fast flowing single track thru the forest,
7 Fire-road/track/roadcrossing/track back down to finish.

Food n drink.
Mick HanneyFeb 17 2025, 10:00pmThanks again for the early volunteers.
I am good for running volunteers.
A shadow laptop person and 1 more non-running volunteer and we should be set, thanks.
Mick HanneyFeb 19 2025, 7:00pmJust to repeat that there won't be an early start on the main race (9k) .
But, the short course is starting 15 mins before main race and at nearly 5k and over 200m of climb it is a decent challenge. So if the early start is normally your preference, there is an option of doing the short course.
Alan AylingFeb 19 2025, 10:38pm^ So only long course people get food & drink? ;-)
Mick HanneyFeb 20 2025, 11:48amlol. Short course runners will get to bar first though, in theory.
Mick HanneyFeb 20 2025, 6:38pmPlease consider using the carpool option if you are a) looking for a lift or b) have room in your care.
Or share a lift down with racing friends (or foes). We have a reasonable amount of car parking but it will fill up quick if we have lots of single occupancy cars. Thanks.
Mick HanneyFeb 20 2025, 7:00pmWe have enough volunteers now, thanks.
Mick HanneyFeb 21 2025, 8:06pmI'll email volunteers mid-week with further information for the day.
Mick HanneyFeb 22 2025, 11:58amShop opens for entries on Monday.
The Event details has lots of information. If there is anything that isn't clear, please ask.
Mick HanneyFeb 23 2025, 6:18pmThis year is the 7th time we host an IMRA race in Annacurra.
Over the years the routes have changed a lot, so can't really compare times year on year.
We have had a great list of winners. Who will win out this year?

Annacurra IMRA Race Role of Honour

2009 Eoin Keith Marie Synott-Wells
2010 Jason Reid Karen O'Hanlon
2013 Des Kennedy Becky Quinn
2014 Jerome Dupuy Moire O'Sullivan
2015 Conor O'Keeffe Niamh O'Boyle
2023 Andrew O Donnghaile Becky Quinn
Mick HanneyFeb 24 2025, 9:40amShop is open and entries are coming in.

Don't forget the car pool option is there to request or offer a lift. Shared occupancy cars will be helpful.
Mick HanneyFeb 24 2025, 5:25pmJust in from a run around the Short Course. 4.6k with c260m of climb, all of which is in the first 2.5k. It is a good challenge.

Ground conditions are slippy in places, so best wear trail runners with grip please for confident cornering.
Mick HanneyFeb 25 2025, 12:59pmEntries rolling in. Great to see the juniors in particular. Just a reminder, in terms of routes, that juniors can run:

- M/F18 can run long course, if they wish.
-Other juniors can run short course. M//F14 & M/FAJ (Accompanied)
Mick HanneyFeb 25 2025, 5:58pmHelp needed please.

My assigned laptop operator has had to pull out so I have a gap in the rota for Saturday. It was one of those things that couldn't be helped.
If anyone can help this race with laptop that would be great. Or perhaps one of the existing volunteer cohort might be familiar with it and happy to take it on, perhaps with guidance from an experienced person at the start of reg?
Liam VinesFeb 25 2025, 8:48pmThere is no show like a Mick Hanney show. On Saturday we are heading to Micks back yard for the first Trail race of the year. NO early start for the main race but the short course is starting 15 minutes before the main race. With 260m of climb the short course will be its own little adventure if anyone is worried about not having an early start option for the main race this is always another option.
Also remember carpooling is still a thing. Please do your best to get a lift or give a lift to the race.. See you all on Saturday.
Barry MurrayFeb 26 2025, 2:23pmI'm coming up for it Mick so you'll get a race report at least ;)
Mick HanneyFeb 26 2025, 2:50pmThanks Barry. I can expect some bets and the usual Fry/Bell rivalry so.

Thanks to those who have kept the carpool ticking over! It would be good to see more activity.
Mick HanneyFeb 26 2025, 3:59pmPopping the request out again for a laptop operator please. I can promise cake, soup and sandwiches as 'pay'.

:-)
James HigginsFeb 26 2025, 8:35pmMick, I have put my name down for the Laptop. Will need a refresher from someone experienced please.
Mick HanneyFeb 26 2025, 9:03pmThanks James. We'll organise that.
Michelle KilleenFeb 27 2025, 10:29amHi, what time will registration close at on Saturday? I will be running the short course with my daughter. Just want to ensure to leave work in time to make it! Thanks a million.
Mick HanneyFeb 27 2025, 10:39amHi Michelle, I hope to do race brief for short course at the start line around 20 to 12. So anyone doing short course needs to be registered by 25 to 12 I'd suggest.
Michelle KilleenFeb 27 2025, 10:43amMany thanks Mick. Appreciate you getting back to me.
Mick HanneyFeb 27 2025, 2:17pmI will provide an update on mandatory kit tomorrow evening. Forecast is pretty good so far.
Mick HanneyFeb 27 2025, 6:36pmWow, the no. of entries is great with 1 day to go.

At registration you will be asked whether you want to do short course or long. If in doubt, check the strava links for each. There is quite a climb on the short course. It starts 15 mins before the long course too (head start!).
Amanda FitzgeraldFeb 27 2025, 9:43pmWas out reece the short course route today with Lochlyn my 7 year old. Really loved this route started of with a big climb for the first 2k or more. Lochlyns words " it was hard but fun". Already really well marked as always by Mick. Looking forward to Saturday it really is a lovely location for a race with a mixture of everything. Our favourite part was the downhill to finish .
Mick HanneyFeb 27 2025, 10:17pmThanks Amanda. Its great to see the kids enjoying the trails and brilliant to see lots of juniors signed up.
Mick HanneyFeb 28 2025, 9:51amre: Mandatory kit, putting this out there early.

Jacket only. Should be carried or worn. There may be random checks.

Also, a reminder please, no headphones.
Joe LalorFeb 28 2025, 1:41pmAnyone passing Foxrock church on N11 on the way to tm's race?
Mick HanneyFeb 28 2025, 1:43pmCan anyone help Joe?

If you are driving solo, if you can share with someone that would be great. Fully appreciating that this cannot work for all.
Miriam MaherFeb 28 2025, 1:56pmHi Joe,

We can collect you on the way. Message me on 0872054137 to sort out the time.

Thanks

Miriam
Jenna MullenFeb 28 2025, 7:45pmHi,

Sorry about this, just wondering, the person I was car pooling with thought they had signed up but it seems like it didn't go through. Is there any chance of registering this evening or on the spot tomorrow? Thank you so much.

Jenna
Mick HanneyFeb 28 2025, 8:19pmHi Jenna,

I'm afraid that a registration after the shop has closed for entries and/or on the morning of an event cannot be done.

Mick
Mick HanneyMar 1 2025, 9:10amIts a lovely morning and we have a big crowd signed up, which is great.

Looking forward to it.

Niamh HattonMar 1 2025, 3:30pm… and I 2nd that comment about the k5 marshal!
Brendan LawlorMar 1 2025, 4:13pmWell done and thanks to Mick and his great team of volunteers for today’s Annacurra race.

My only complaint would be the shortage of forum briefing information from the Race Director.. poor form Mick, keep us posted a bit better next time :) !
Barry MurrayMar 1 2025, 5:06pmA picture perfect day for a picture perfect trail race . Hall, car parking , a pub and even a playground to leave the kids in during the race !

I’ve done a few of Micks races over the years but that tops the lot for me . Really fun free flowing route too .

I’ll leave the rest for the report !
Clare KeeleyMar 1 2025, 5:26pmThank you Mick, your team of volunteers and your lads out on the route for a gorgeous morning out on a great little route.
Amanda FitzgeraldMar 1 2025, 6:23pmThankyou Mick and volunteers . Great route, great location and very well marked. Really enjoyed this run today and the weather was fab. Great to see lots of juniors and some new timers too. Well done to all.
Mick HanneyMar 1 2025, 7:39pmThanks for the nice words.
Whilst demarking and taking in the vista of hills around, I realise how lucky we are to have this on the doorstep
@Barry - the combo of parking, hall, pub, start line, playground, river (if you wanted it) is magic.
@ Brendan - point taken :-)

And yes, some reports would be good.
Mick HanneyMar 2 2025, 6:54pmThanks to our IT guys for getting the results up.
Great times and great contests throughout the field.
Keith CarrMar 2 2025, 7:49pmHi, I ran some of the route today. I came across a bundle of markers up the top where the trees are across the fire road (sticks with red and white tape). They had been collected and placed to side of the fire road. Maybe for collection later, but just a reminder in case they were over looked.
Mick HanneyMar 2 2025, 8:05pmHi Keith, my hands were full with markers yesterday, so I put those poles to one side for my follow up visit tomorrow. Cheers, Mick
Joachim PietschMar 3 2025, 9:31amThanks to the organiser and all the volunteers. It was a lovely day and an exciting race.
Barry MurrayMar 3 2025, 2:21pmas promised, report up :

Barry MinnockMar 3 2025, 2:36pmFantastic race, great course, great location and even fantastic weather to top things off. Glad I made the trip down. Thanks Mick & crew
Ben ConroyMar 5 2025, 5:31pmGreat race Mick and team thanks for all the work...loved the fast downhill through the trees towards the end bit of a white knuckle ride, thought I'd hit terminal velocity only to see Alice glide by me cool as a breeze...just uploaded bunch of photo last night btw...
