28 November, 2009Hell Fire Winter League race - Preliminary report by Douglas Barry
US based Peter Dalton had his first mountain race outing as a senior and made sure it was a good one. The Sallynoggin runner who is on a track scholarship in the good ole US of A had a comprehensive win finishing over a minute ahead of Eoin (pronounced Ian) Keith with the first junior Sean O'Heireartaigh in third place. Adrian Tucker was first M40 in an impressive 4th place overall while Bruce Shenker won the over 50s.
Emma Sokell showed she is returning to form as she beat two Irish internationals Orla Gormley and Nicky Cinnamond for the women's victory. Mary O'Connell won the veteran's race while Jane Watt took the over 50s section. On the short course, Siobhan Murphy edged out Alexandra Molloy and Aine Gallagher for a close win. Over 90 runners took part, despite the cold onset of real winter, and with another 4 winter league races to go, it looks like the battle for places will be as uncompromising as usual!!
