2001 Races
Glounageenty - Report by Matt Twomey
Lenihan Invincible At Base Camp
The World Trials races incorporating the final round of the Munster Championship were run in Glounageenty, John Lenihan?s very own town-land on Sunday 12th August 2001 in cloudy but comfortable weather conditions. The event, which was also organised by John Lenihan with the help of friends and neighbours from the Ballymacelligot area, was a major success.
There was much speculation prior to the race about the possible outcome of the challenge to Lenihan?s supremacy on his own turf. George Lonergan of Raheny Shamrocks A.C., a former Junior Hill Running International was tipped as a serious challenger as was Simon Fairmaner of DSD. The general speculation was that Lenihan could not possibly go on forever.
John took out the race for the first mile with a large group in tow. This group broke up at that point leaving Lenihan, Lonergan and Fairmaner to slog it out up front. Lonergan and Fairmaner swept past Lenihan at the 2nd mile stage and held the lead to the 3rd mile marker. Lenihan found another gear at this stage and hauled in the pair on Bernard?s Mountain. All hell broke loose on the climb as Lonergan dropped Fairmaner and began to reel in Lenihan. The ultra-competitive Fairmaner was not giving in. He swept past Lonergan and Lenihan on the descent and led to the foot of Francie Lenihan?s Mountain. Lenihan kicked at this point and it was all over. He came in the clear winner on 56:31 with 1:13 to spare on Lonergan 2nd on 57:44. Fairmaner was a further 1:55 behind when he finished 3rd on 59:39.
Joan Flanagan Was the Top Lady
Joan Flanagan of Crusaders led out the Ladies for the first lap of 2.5 miles to Bernard?s Mountain with Blaithin Hannon of St. Finbarrs A.C. chasing. Ailish Brosnan of Riocht A.C. was back in third place. Brosnan put in the work on the 2nd lap and had a 10 metre lead on Hannon the second time through Bernard?s Mountain. These positions held to the finish. Flanagan finished 1st on 46:51 from Brosnan 2nd on 49:01, with Hannon finishing 3rd on 50:15.
Duncan and Tierney take Junior honours
Niall Duncan of U.C.C. put in a scorching pace in the Junior Men?s race to finish in the amazing time of 38:29 to win the category. Seosamh O'Muirheartaigh of D.S.D. was 2nd on 43:46. James Doran of Riocht A.C. was 3rd on 45:06 with Peter Dalton of D.S.D. 4th on 49:13 after taking an unintentional excursion. Teresa Tierney of Marian A.C. won the Junior Ladies category in a time of 33:34. She was followed home by three Kerry women, Margaret O?Connor of Gneeveguilla A.C. , Mairead Lane of Riocht A.C. and and Brid O?Sullivan of Gneevguilla A.C. who were 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively on 34:47, 35:44 and 38:34.
