Irish Trail Running Championships - Preliminary report by Douglas Barry
Switching the Irish Trail Running Championships to the beautiful surrounds of Avondale demense deep in the heart of Wicklow failed to provide the attendance fillip that this excellent event needs. Local stalwart of the Parnell club Mick Byrne had the legs of the rest of the field in the absence of last year's champion Peter Dalton. His main opposition came from 1999 champion Eoin Keith and his Parnell teammate Billy Porter the many time Wicklow cross country champion. Mary Jennings who has won many honours at the marathon and occasionally in mountain running won the women's race ahead of Parnell athlete Jenny McCauley and the strong finishing Jane Watt. A setting that deserves a greater entry could benefit from an earlier date, perhaps April??
