Hilda Dooley | Feb 23 2011, 10:35am | Hi. I have never done a hill run before and by the looks of the race list, the Little Sliabh Bui is one of the best ones for a beginner. Is that right? I do a bit of road running and other sports, so have a bit of fitness but am worried about having to stop and start and maybe holding other people up, stuff like that. any comments? Thanks |
Jim Fitzharris | Feb 23 2011, 11:33am | Hilda, Yes, I think that would be a good one. I do not know where you are based but the first Spring League race at Hellfire would be an ideal start. You will never "hold anyone up" at one of these shorter races. Cheers, Jim. |
Hilda Dooley | Feb 24 2011, 10:14am | Thanks Jim. That date suited me, so that was another reason for doing that one. The other date looks OK too, so hope to give one of them a go. thanks again |
Jane Porter | Feb 24 2011, 9:45pm | Hilda, Jane and Graham here, designers of both courses, Hellfire and Little Sliabh Bhui. We can recommend both but definately the gentler of the two is Little Sliabh Bhui. We moved from Dublin to Wexford a few years ago and designed this course as an introduction to trail running in Wexford. It is a four mile course with only gradual hills as trail runs go. Hopefully we will see you in Wexford. If you are travelling from Dublin it is a very easy drive down the N11. |
Rene Borg | Mar 10 2011, 12:43pm | As a bit of warm-up to this race now that it has made official IMRA status, the records to beat for the course were both set in the inaugural year of 2009 (results here: http://www.imra.ie/events/view/id/685/www.imra.ie/ad-hoc/SliabhBuiResults.pdf). They stand at: Men - 23:05 (Keith Heary, St. Laurence O'Tooles) Women - 27:08 (Fiona Kehoe, Kilmore AC) |
Jane Porter | Mar 21 2011, 9:06pm | Photos of the race can now be viewed on the gallery of www.slaneyolympic.com. Thanks to all who travelled to the race. We have two more trail races: Kilbrannish South (6 miles) on the slopes of Mt Leinster on 8th May and Gibbet Hill(7 miles)near Bunclody on 29th May.Then on 10th July there is the Mount Leinster race which is part of the Leinster Championships. With improved roads these races are just over an hour from Dublin so we hope you will come to the "Sunny South East". And if you fancy a bit of road running there is the Strawberry Half Marathon on 26th June which this year also incorporates a 5 mile race for those that don't want to tackle the longer distance. Details and online entry on www.strawberryhalfmarathon.com |

Rene Borg | Mar 22 2011, 10:33am | Weekend round-up now at MST: http://www.mudsweatandtears.co.uk/2011/03/22/big-records-at-little-sliabh-bui/ Little Sliabh Bui part added into race reports. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 22 2011, 1:48pm | I ran some of these Slaney trail races last year and they are great events thanks to Jane and Graham. Can we add Kilbranish and Gibbet Hill onto the imra calendar for visibility please? |
Rene Borg | Mar 22 2011, 10:06pm | A little bit of trivia on this race that has come up over the weekend. As it turns out Little Sliabh Bui has a name after all and it seems to be Ballycadden Hill. The race name may not necessarily have to change although it is worth considering since it is a fine name. Out of curiousity are there any good running trails on Sliabh Bui itself across the road? |
Jane Porter | Mar 24 2011, 8:56am | 164 new photos of Sunday's race are now uploaded. With regard to "Big" Sliabh Bhui there certainly are trails there but with a lot more climb. We decided on it's smaller neighbour for an introduction to trail running. With regard to the name, we inquired locally a couple of years ago as to it's name but could not get an answer. Well done Aoife for finding out. The jury is out on whether the name will be changed next year! Next trail race in the sunny south east is Kilbrannish South (correct name!) on the slopes of Mt Leinster on 8th May followed by Gibbet Hill on 29th May, both at 11am. |
Dermot Murphy | Mar 25 2011, 2:54pm | Thanks for those dates Jane, the other two races have now been added to the calendar. |
