Liam Vines | Jul 27 2025, 1:50pm | Race page is updated. We still need an RD for this race The Wet Weather route is imposed by the NPWS to avoid erosion on the wetter part of the route. It would be well worth while having a look at both routs from Mullaghcleevaun to the finish. See do the pictures make sense and if they don’t, ask as many questions as you like. |
Mick Hanney | Jul 30 2025, 11:44am | Hi, We are looking for an RD for this event please. Might suit someone who will have completed the league in the other 3 to 4 races. Thanks Mick |
Derek Hay | Aug 11 2025, 6:55pm | Evening, Entries are open in the shop for this, the price has been set at 10 euro to cover the cost of the bus to bring runners over to the start at Glenmacnass. For anyone thats interested in running it I will be recceing the route over the coming weekend, either Saturday or Friday evening Im not sure which yet details on that to follow shortly. If you would like to join me give me a shout on O ate 6 won nine won 7546. Thanks, Derek. |
John Bell | Aug 11 2025, 8:10pm | @Liam, i have a question on the wet weather route. Do you have to go through the gate or can you go over it. It might be rusted shut. ;-) |
Derek Hay | Aug 12 2025, 5:08pm | Just to confirm for anyone interested, I'll be doing a recce of the wet weather route this Friday 15th, meeting at Zellers in Lacken at 5:30pm. It will be at a leisurely pace so no pressure, anyone not sure about Nav or the route are welcome to come and and give it a go, weather is looking perfect too! I look forward to seeing you there. P.S. Dont worry John I'll make sure the gate is working and well oiled :) |
Mick Hanney | Aug 15 2025, 10:55pm | This is a super route. Got lucky with a fab evening on the hills this evening for a recce, which I will probably all forget come race day. |
Derek Hay | Aug 16 2025, 8:29am | Good morning all, As Mick has mentioned we went out and and opted to run the main route as opposed to the wet weather version previously advertised... we were not disappointed! With stunning views of Blessington lakes and surrounding mountains the race route is an absolute gem and I'd advise anyone unsure about signing up to jump in and give it a go. There's plenty of nav/route choice and the ground is soft and springy in its current condition making for a really enjoyable run in the hills. Plus I'm sure if you ask Mick nicely he'll be glad to offload some of the helpful pointers he picked up on the recce :) Over the next week or two I plan on getting up and looking at the second route option coming off Mullaghcleevaun to the wet weather control point. If running this iteration of the route interests you then you can contact me on the number I posted below previously. Last thing, we are all good for volunteers now, thank you to everyone thats signed up I'll be in touch shortly. |
Derek Hay | Aug 19 2025, 9:53pm | Good evening, I'm going to give the wet weather route a look this Thursday 21st. For anyone interested we will be meeting at Ballynultagh forest for 5:30pm (Google maps link below) https://maps.app.goo.gl/hyhLzU3qMuEv7j1a8 An out and back to Mullaghcleevaun summit, 12k approx at an easy pace. I look forward to seeing you there. |
Derek Hay | Aug 23 2025, 9:16am | Just a reminder that entries are limited for this event so get signed up if you're interested!. I've had a good look at the route over the past week and can confirm its a stunner, taking in some of the most scenic and remote parts of the wicklow mountains.
The views (on a clear day) overlooking Blessington lakes are fabulous so if you have the day free and can navigate using only a map and compass then this one not to be missed.

Also, as per the event page, carpooling where possible is encouraged due to the small carpark at Zellers.

We look forward to welcoming you there next Sunday 31st. |
Mick Hanney | Aug 25 2025, 11:37am | When do we call the route for this one? Very dry on the hills. |
Derek Hay | Aug 25 2025, 11:53am | Hi Mick, You're right it is very dry at the moment but the plan is to make a call on the route later in the week, this is due to NPWS stipulations and the wet weather that's forecast over the coming days. I'll chat to Liam and post an update when I have one. |
David Pender | Aug 26 2025, 1:32pm | HI, I've not done a championship race before but i've done a nav challenge. Do we bring our own map of the area or is it provided? thanks, Dave |
Chloe Hay | Aug 26 2025, 1:58pm | Hi Dave, Runners would normally be expected to bring their own maps to championship races. However if you do not have one in this instance we can supply a map covering the route. If you wish to source your own copy then eastwest maps do a west Wicklow 1-25000 map or OSI 56 1-50000 cover the area, hope that makes sense, if not you can contact either myself or Derek on - 0h ate 6 won 9 won 7546 and we will get you sorted. Thanks |
Kathleen Curran | Aug 26 2025, 9:21pm | Hi All, Just a quick heads up for anyone thinking about descending directly through the ferns for the WW route. There is a massive hole (at least 5ft and wide) hidden in the ferns easy to miss!! |
Chloe Hay | Aug 28 2025, 7:38pm | Good evening all, As it stands the normal route will be on so plan for a lovely ridge run across Black hill. We will continue to watch the weather and if it rains persistently from Friday evening to Sunday morning we will change to the wet weather option. We look forward to seeing you all Sunday. - Kind Regards the Mullaghcleevaun race team :) |
Derek Hay | Yesterday, 4:40pm | Reminder, Entries for this event will close at 6pm tomorrow. Also, before signing up, please ensure you are capable of using a map and compass to navigate on the mountain. You will be running in a remote area on a route that isn't marked, potentially in poor visibility and conditions. Kit requirement below: Level C - Advanced Waterproof jacket with integrated hood and taped seams Hat or buff Gloves Whistle Charged mobile phone with emergency number stored Foil blanket, bivvy bag or equivalent Waterproof full leg cover Means to carry a minimum of 500 mL water Emergency food Map of route/area Compass Kits will be checked at registration. Pease try to carpool where possible as the parking at Zellers is fairly limited. To anyone planning to give it a go, we look forward to welcoming you to this lovely part of west wicklow, the bus has been booked and the post race refreshments have been ordered, all you need to do now is turn up with your kit!... See you Sunday! |
