Mick Hanney | Jan 2 2019, 12:29pm | I shall post here when entries are open. I anticipate this will be early Feb. |
Mick Hanney | Jan 2 2019, 9:09pm | 1st Feb entries will open. |
Mick Hanney | Feb 1 2019, 6:59am | Entries available to purchase. |
Leo Mahon | Feb 2 2019, 7:49pm | The Maurice Mullins Half is the official trial race for the Interceltic Trail race In Guerdalan Brittany on the 8th June Target times men 2 hours women 2hours 25mins successful athletes would have competed in 6 IMRA races in 2018/2019 Any queries should be directed to selection@imra.ie Leo Mahon |
David G Fassbender | Feb 3 2019, 2:15pm | How can someone who has their Maurice Mullins mugs (x4) proudly on display at home ensure that they get one again this year?! (Signed and paid up for the Half) |
Mick Hanney | Feb 3 2019, 2:49pm | There should be a mug at the finish line for all finishers this year. |
David G Fassbender | Feb 4 2019, 11:21am | Super. Thanks, Mick |
Mick Hanney | Feb 7 2019, 10:01pm | Early shout for volunteers who can help out with the trail/ultra races which are a highlight of the IMRA year. The Trail is selling very well early on. I'll keep the entry levels under review and will post early if we feel a cap is necessary. At the moment there is no cap, but a cap on entries might become necessary from a logistics point of view, with buses, parking etc. Once you've signed up entries are non-transferable. |
JUDITH ROBINSON | Feb 11 2019, 9:17pm | Are Salomon Speedcross ok for this? |
Warren Swords | Feb 11 2019, 9:49pm | Should be fine in speed cross. Course varies a bit depending on weather. Some years, you had to contend with snow and ice, other years, road shoes worked well. |
JUDITH ROBINSON | Feb 12 2019, 10:26pm | Thanks Warren |
Mick Hanney | Feb 13 2019, 1:00pm | Entries continue to sell well. If interested buy early. If you can't run you might consider helping out at either of the Maurice Mullins races. Thanks. |
Mick Hanney | Feb 14 2019, 4:14pm | As of today more than 150 entries are in for this race. Given the logistics involved, with buses, mug orders and the like, a provisional cap on numbers of 200 has been set. We'll keep this under review. So, if you want to enter, or know someone that wants to enter, please take note. |
Aisling Kirwan | Feb 14 2019, 9:48pm | I’m registered for the ultra, requesting to switch to trail if possible |
Mick Hanney | Feb 14 2019, 10:27pm | Noted Aisling, even if you are more than capable of the former! :-) |
Mick Hanney | Feb 15 2019, 5:21pm | The Maurice Mullins Half is selling very well, almost too well. As of now we are c. 10 off the cap of 200. If and more likely when we hit the 200 cap I'll look at the possibility of another bus and if that can be arranged the cap will increase slightly but then that will be that. I'll post on the forum here accordingly with any update. No waiting lists. |
Miriam O'Connor | Feb 15 2019, 7:53pm | What time do you anticipate the bus’ll be leaving for the start of the half event? |
Miriam O'Connor | Feb 15 2019, 7:53pm | What time do you anticipate the bus’ll be leaving for the start of the half event? |
Mick Hanney | Feb 15 2019, 8:54pm | Similar to last year registration at Leopardstown will be from 9:45 to 11am. Buses will depart once full; so there will be staged departures, last one just after 11. |
Mick Hanney | Feb 15 2019, 9:00pm | CAP reached. Thats 200 entries more than a month ahead... See post from earlier (5:21pm) for further info. |
Jean Molloy | Feb 17 2019, 12:48pm | Hi there, Will there be a waiting list for the Trail? Thanks. Jean Molloy. |
Karl Milligan | Feb 17 2019, 4:49pm | Disaster - 26km full and only realised today. If the busses are full can i register, pay and get a lift to the start line ??? And/or is there a waiting list And/or ... any chance of another buss (long shot) Karl |

Jenny Lawler | Feb 17 2019, 4:54pm | Yeah I'm so sad to have missed it too! |
Mick Hanney | Feb 17 2019, 5:41pm | Please read threads earlier in the forum before you post questions as they may have been answered earlier. If you have missed the cap so far add your name to the following post (copy and post the list and add name). It'll give me an idea of demand. A small increase of the cap is possible. Also, if people who booked, cannot make it, that could free up spaces in due course. The cap is not just about the buses but also general race logistics and safety given with narrow tracks and 2 events happening in parallel. Addition of a name is not a guarantee of entry. I'll try give notice of any cap increase to be fair to everyone. Interested in Entry:- 1. Jenny Lawler 2. Karl Milligan 3. Jean Molloy. |

Mick Hanney | Feb 18 2019, 10:58am | I intend to increase the Cap, subject to confirmation, this Fri evening. I'll follow up in the coming days with an exact time. It'll be first come first serve in terms of securing those additional places. Please continue to add names to the Interested list so I am aware of the outstanding demand. |

Anne Hodge | Feb 19 2019, 7:51am | Oops. Thanks Brendan! |
Mick Hanney | Feb 19 2019, 11:34am | I will increase cap by c. 25 spots on Fri evening at 9pm. I cannot hold spots for people so its first come first served via the IMRA shop. In the lead up to the race if paid-up entrants drop out for any reason and can let us know on this forum thread we'll see if we can put in place some sort of process to allocate seats if demand is still there. We cannot facilitate refunds I'm afraid. Just an advance word on parking. It will be at Leopardstown as per pervious years and we will have security patrolling. A shuttle bus will run afterwards from Johnny Foxes to Leopardstown. |

Mick Hanney | Feb 22 2019, 1:33pm | @Niamh & Karl - I will facilitate your switch to trail. Cheers, mick |
Mick Hanney | Feb 22 2019, 7:12pm | No more switchers between ultra & half aka trail please. From now until a week before the race if people who are registered for the trail, find they need to pull out, please let me know - best via the forum - so I can keep tabs of any drop-outs. I would prefer to minimise any seats lost particularly if there is demand still for seats and I'll see what I can practically do without it becoming an industry. |

Mary Rogers | Feb 24 2019, 12:15pm | Hi, I’m new to Imra races and wondering how the waitlist works. Sadly just missed the extra places on Fri (tried at about 9.08). Everyone above us on original list now has a place but we are still further down the list. Im sure there’s a good reason but don’t want to build hopes up that we’ll get a place if it’s not a simple move up as people get places process. Thanks Mary |
Mick Hanney | Feb 24 2019, 1:09pm | Sorry you missed out on Friday. The demand really has been unprecedented. The way I see it, if people with entries cannot make it they can transfer to those on list. I reordered list just slightly - race director prerogative - to give preference to those I know have worked hard between the scenes for IMRA, whether its on committee roles or other volunteering. Given where you are placed with a month to go I'd be optimistic. But it depends on people, who cannot make it, letting me know to facilitate transfers. |
Mary Rogers | Feb 24 2019, 8:29pm | Thanks Mick. Makes total sense, Volunteers make these events happen so they absolutely deserve some reward. I’ll keep training just in case. Thanks again. Mary |

Mick Hanney | Feb 25 2019, 11:16am | The finish line for the race will be at the Stars of Erin GAA club in Glencullen. NO PARKING at the finish area. There is likely to be an underage match on at the time so parking there will be limited. We will have a room provided there to store drop-bags collected from people before they board the bus. On that front I am looking for assistance. Given the amount of people taking part, if someone has a van and can help on the morning of the race to take drop-bags from the bus start at Leopardstown up to the GAA club, their help would be most welcome. |

Mick Hanney | Feb 27 2019, 6:40pm | Thanks in advance to Tommy Galvin who has offered to assist with a van to move drop-bags from the registration in Leopardstown up to the finish line at Stars of Erin GAA club Glencullen. |
stephen erswell | Feb 27 2019, 8:29pm | Are there shower facilities at the finish and will there be a water station along the route or is it a completely self sufficient race? |
Mick Hanney | Feb 27 2019, 9:01pm | I've asked the question about dressing rooms. Showers are unlikely to be honest. If the club has matches on that afternoon their own events will take precedence. Usually water at Crone and Curtlestown. The ultra runners will need it more. As for self-sufficiency it depends on what you are used to for long runs. Personally I've never had to carry water in the half. And a quick sip at the aid station and I was away. |
stephen erswell | Feb 27 2019, 9:14pm | Thanks for letting me know Mick |
Sinéad Murtagh | Mar 2 2019, 10:43pm | Hi Can I add my name to the list. Many Thanks Sinéad |

Ann Horan | Mar 3 2019, 7:27pm | Hi Mick Is it ok if I add my name to the waiting list? Thanks a million Ann Horan |
Mick Hanney | Mar 3 2019, 7:36pm | Ann - add away, but I'm not in control of the waiting lists momentum unfortunately. With 20 days to go anything, or nothing might happen.. |

Deirdre Galvin | Mar 5 2019, 9:12pm | Hi, I realise this is quite late in the day, but wondering if any people would be up for a route reccie this coming Sunday? I am doing the half, and don't really know it, apart from the run off Djouce to Crone. Perhaps someone who knows it well would like a handy jaunt around the hills on Sunday, easy-paced. I live in the West, so this would really be my only chance. No worries if it doesn't suit. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 5 2019, 9:40pm | Please ignore the race result as obviously it hasn't happened yet :-) Moved waiting list to Report section for ease of maintenance. To see waiting list, click on Race Report for Event. No further additions at this time until I see how it progresses. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 6 2019, 10:57am | According to my contact at the GAA there will be dressing rooms available. Can't guarantee shower availability, but you could come prepared just in case. |
Ross Vickers | Mar 6 2019, 3:50pm | Hi I am registered for the Half but due to injury I am no longer able to participate. Hopefully someone will get the opportunity to take my place and enjoy a wonderful event and race. |
Ronan King | Mar 6 2019, 4:03pm | Hi Mick was wondering if there is any places for maurice mullens half , could i go on waiting list Thanks Ronan |
Ronan King | Mar 6 2019, 4:03pm | Hi Mick was wondering if there is any places for maurice mullens half , could i go on waiting list Thanks Ronan |
Mick Hanney | Mar 6 2019, 4:26pm | @Ross - sorry to hear that. Speedy recovery. I'll pass your entry onto next in line. @Ronan - not taking any more additions to waiting list at the moment. Too many waiting as it is and it may not move much if at all. If that changes I'll open it up further. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 8 2019, 2:50pm | Call for volunteers for ultra and trail. With 2 weeks to go we will need more volunteers. The volunteer list for the ultra in particular is looking a bit slim. Where it makes sense to do so we'll overlap some volunteers between the races. I'll follow up with volunteers who have come forward in due course to figure out availability, appreciating that some people have other calls on their time and agree what times best suit. Thanks again. |
Ronan King | Mar 10 2019, 8:52am | Thanks Mick ,You can put me down for volunteer |
Mick Hanney | Mar 10 2019, 10:43am | Much obliged Ronan. |
Owen Harney | Mar 10 2019, 7:18pm | Hi all, I see here that showers are unlikely to be available afterwards (which is fair enough if there are matches on etc.). Can anyone suggest any "pay as you go" gym/other venue nearby that I could pop into for a shower? Travelling to and from the west that day so would be great if there is somewhere around. Cheers, |
Mick Hanney | Mar 10 2019, 7:54pm | Come prepared Owen and with luck the club will be able to facilitate, all going well. More a chance of facilitating a few, that have travelled far, that are more in need. |
Owen Harney | Mar 10 2019, 8:31pm | Thanks Mick |
Mick Hanney | Mar 11 2019, 3:27pm | If anyone has entered the race but cannot now run please let me know so I can promote someone from the waiting list. Thanks. |
Anna Cronin | Mar 11 2019, 9:22pm | Hi Mick, Can you remove Luke Steele from waiting list. Thanks, Anna |
Mick Hanney | Mar 12 2019, 10:55am | @Anna - done. |
Laurence Quinn | Mar 12 2019, 3:30pm | Hi Mick, you can give my place to somebody on the waiting list as I won't be able to run. Cheers |
Mick Hanney | Mar 12 2019, 4:55pm | Thanks Laurence, sorry to hear you can’t run. I’ll promote the next person on the list later on. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 12 2019, 7:23pm | @ Olga Brennan - you have an entry. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 12 2019, 7:29pm | Entry passed on. Mary Rogers, you are up. |

Mick Hanney | Mar 13 2019, 10:08am | @ Emmet Wardell. You have an entry. Please respond ASAP to confirm acceptance. Thanks. |
Owen Harney | Mar 13 2019, 12:16pm | Hi all, I have my 2019 race number, but don't yet have a timing chip. My last race was in Ballyhoura in January before new chips had been sorted (if I recall correctly). Just checking to be sure I can get one at this event? Cheers |
Mick Hanney | Mar 13 2019, 1:31pm | Likelihood is timing chips will not be used at this event. |
Owen Harney | Mar 13 2019, 1:49pm | That's grand, thanks Mick. I have all I need so. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 13 2019, 8:13pm | @Kevin Gilleece, you have an entry. I don't see you registered with a 2019 race no. If you want to enter you need to register. Please confirm asap or I will transfer to next person on list. |
Anna Cronin | Mar 13 2019, 8:49pm | Hi Mick, yes I’ll take the spot, thanks. How do I pay? |
Mick Hanney | Mar 13 2019, 9:07pm | Hi Anna, please pop me an email at hanneymick at gmail dot com. Regards, Mick |
Paul O'Grady | Mar 13 2019, 9:13pm | Hi Mick, if you open up the waiting list again, can you put me on it please? |
Mick Hanney | Mar 13 2019, 9:39pm | re: waiting list. I don't want to raise expectations of it moving fast, as I've no control over it. I will only extend it if current list falls to 3, and then only to IMRA runners who have ran and volunteered before. In that event I will bear your request (Paul) and Ronan King's previous ask in mind. |
Emmet Wardell | Mar 14 2019, 7:47am | @mick Hanney, count me in. Sorry for delay in responding |
Emmet Wardell | Mar 14 2019, 7:47am | @mick Hanney, count me in. Sorry for delay in responding |
Mick Hanney | Mar 14 2019, 12:07pm | @Michelle Rowley - you have an entry if you want it. Please confirm with me you'll take it or I'll pass to the next in line. Thanks. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 15 2019, 12:11pm | Some info in advance ahead of next week. Much of this is in the race details, but just in case you haven't read it! Car parking for the Half is in Leopardstown beside the racecourse, similar to other years. There is a map on the event showing the exact location. It is on the link road from Carrickmines Luas into Leopardstown, NOT on the Sandyford side. If not driving the LUAS is a handy way to get to registration. Car park is expected to open at 9.45 for first registrations. Please don't leave valuables in the cars. The car park will be monitored by security but best not to take chances. We will take gear bags from runners which will be brought to the finish line at Stars of Erin GAA where we should have dressing rooms. Space can be limited so please be sensible with your bag size. When you get the bus only take with you what you intend running with. Gear shouldn't be left on buses. No headphones as per IMRA rules. Only runners who have approved entries (names on my list!) will be registered. After the race a shuttle bus will run back and forth to the car park. Last bus is at 5pm. Car park will close on c. 6pm. |
Fabio Baltieri | Mar 15 2019, 5:17pm | Hey Mick, my partner Maria Plaias (761) is registered for the half but sadly she cannot race. Can you give her place to someone else please? Thanks for all the hard work organizing this! |
Karl Milligan | Mar 15 2019, 6:33pm | Mick thanks for the info update. I have one update.... Pints in Jonny foxes from 3pm :)))) Karl |
Mick Hanney | Mar 15 2019, 7:16pm | Thanks for the update Fabio. Sorry to hear that. I'll pass that on to the next in line. If anyone else cannot make next weeks race, I would appreciate notice, as the places are in demand. Thanks. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 15 2019, 7:49pm | @ Derek O'Brien - there is an entry for you. Please confirm that you will take it up or I'll pass it on. Thanks. |
Derek O'Brien | Mar 15 2019, 8:03pm | Hi Mick, I will gladly take it, never thought I’d get a spot thanks |
Mick Hanney | Mar 15 2019, 8:23pm | No problem Derek, enjoy. |
Alan Maher | Mar 16 2019, 8:53am | @mickhanney. Last-minute.com: Please add me to cancellation list MMH. Cheers. |

Colin Halloran | Mar 17 2019, 8:05am | Mick, You asked me to remind you closer to the date that I accidentally signed up for the half and would like to be moved to the full. Thanks a million See you Saturday |
Mick Hanney | Mar 17 2019, 8:50am | That’s ok. That was agreed early on. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 17 2019, 12:07pm | @ Eoghan O'Gorman. A place is available for you. Please confirm you will take it. Thanks. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 17 2019, 1:00pm | @ Enda Maguire. A place is available in the race for you should you want it. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 17 2019, 1:06pm | Copying Richard's post from the Ultra thread as its useful here too. This year we will be providing all runners with Wrist bands at Registration along with their race numbers. MM ULTRA - Red MM Ultra Early start - Purple MM Trail - Green This will help us with the finish where we have the same finish line for all runners and identify who is running in which race along the way. So, at race sign-on for the Half make sure you get and wear your wrist band. No Early Starters on the Half. |
Enda Maguire | Mar 17 2019, 3:27pm | Yep Mick Ill take that spot for sure. thanks |
Mick Hanney | Mar 17 2019, 4:14pm | Thanks Enda. Enjoy. 6 days to get training in ! |
Ben Ralph | Mar 17 2019, 4:33pm | Hi Mick, I’ll take that entry please. I’ve already paid for it, so I think everything is in order! Thanks, Ben |
Mick Hanney | Mar 17 2019, 4:51pm | Thanks Ben, you are on my entry list alright. Enjoy. I'll post full entry list later in the week. |
Enda Maguire | Mar 17 2019, 6:46pm | Mick I need to pay for my registration. How do i go about that? |
Mick Hanney | Mar 17 2019, 6:50pm | @Enda - please pop an email to me at Hanneymick at gmail dot com and I'll advise. |
dominic galwey | Mar 18 2019, 11:46am | Hi Mick. I have stepped up my training and entered the ultra. Feeling good so next person on the list can take my place for the half. Cheers. |

Mick Hanney | Mar 18 2019, 9:01pm | The waiting list has almost run its course. It will not be extended further as it takes an overhead to manage and I need to start wrapping things up to prepare for next Saturday. I hope, by Weds or Thurs, to post the entry list. If anyone cannot make the race having gotten an entry already please advise as the waiting list still has a handful of names. Thanks again. Heres looking forward to next Saturday. |

Damien McParland | Mar 19 2019, 12:22pm | Hi Mick, I won't be able to do the half this weekend unfortunately. Feel free to give my spot away if you're still doing transfers. Thanks, Damien. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 19 2019, 12:32pm | Sorry you can’t mske it Damien. Thanks for letting me know. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 19 2019, 3:48pm | The waiting list has expired. Thanks to those who let me know they couldn't make it to facilitate transfers. The final entry list will be prepared over the next day or so. |
Colm Moran | Mar 19 2019, 11:47pm | Hi Mick, a quick question regarding the route. The plotaroute map provided shows the route taking a brief shortcut off the Wicklow way between the Dargle, and Crone car park. It is just after the lovely trail overlooking Powerscourt waterfall, as this trail turns to fire-road, or zig-zags downhill before turning back toward crone and flattening again. The route map shows the route to take a trail skipping the zig-zag and going directly downhill cutting the corner. The race description says “follow the Wicklow way, no shortcuts”, so I assume this is a simple error on the plotaroute map, but just wanted to confirm this either way so as there’s no confusion on the day. Many thanks for the hard work, Colm |
Conor O'Farrell | Mar 20 2019, 12:58am | Hi Colm Yes, it’s just an error on the plot-a-route map. It’s WW all the way. Con |
Mick Hanney | Mar 20 2019, 9:48am | Thanks Conor, that's correct. I have added a garmin link (my race from last year) and removed the plotaroute link. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 20 2019, 10:54am | A note on Ballinastoe: 1. Between the time of the bus drop-off and the MMH race start please stay off the main trail towards Lough Tay so as to give clear running to any ultra racers coming and going. 2. When the race starts please stay on one side of the fire road - I would suggest stay on the right - to give room for ultra runners coming the other way. 3. Don't leave any gear or rubbish behind in Ballinastoe. Only bring what you need to run with. IMRA members should comply with Leave no Trace rules. 4. There will be a couple of portaloos in place to facilitate racers. |

Mick Hanney | Mar 20 2019, 8:38pm | For those not driving, the sign-on venue at the Leopardstown link road is quite handy for the Carrickmines Luas stop. c10 min walk. I'll try get the gate open nearest the Luas stop end. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 20 2019, 8:50pm | Chip timing won't be used for this event. If you forget your race no, and you've ran already in 2019, we'll take a charity cash contribution of €5 for a new race number. So gentle reminder! |
Karl Milligan | Mar 20 2019, 8:59pm | Any help on questions below welcomed... 1. At half way point is there water ? 2. Is there any grub (bananas) there ? Cheers Karl |
Mick Hanney | Mar 20 2019, 9:06pm | There will be some refreshments at Crone and Curtlestown. Its usually water, jellies and other bits and pieces -could be figrolls etc. Depends on what the checkpoint volunteer picked up. If ordinarily you need water when running a half marathon then I'd suggest you carry some. Don't wholly depend on the rest stop as having helped at a rest stop before its hard to estimate what is needed and demand can also be weather dependent. |
Karl Milligan | Mar 20 2019, 9:31pm | Thanks Mick. Ill bring a bar or 2. Karl |
Mick Hanney | Mar 21 2019, 7:07pm | Don't forget a jacket is mandatory in IMRA races. It would be a shame to run so far and get DSQed at the finish line ;-) |

Mick Hanney | Mar 22 2019, 12:52pm | Yes. Except no chip timing this time out. At Registration there’ll be 2 queues: 1. For those who ran already in 2019 and have their no. 2. New for 2019 so a race no. will be given out. All runners need to sign in and you will get a wrist band to wear in the race to distinguish MMH runners from ultra runners. |

Conor O'Farrell | Mar 22 2019, 3:51pm | Ah Mick, you've gone soft. You shouldn't let them drop out without joining a waiting list first! ;-) On a serious note, I hope the injuries/illnesses clear up soon. It happened to me for last years MM and it sucks big-time! |
Elio Macuka | Mar 22 2019, 4:06pm | Hi, coming via Luas to the Car park so wanted to know if there will be a option to leave some stuff for the finish line( some clean t-shirt and jacket). Tnx |

Garry Cullinan | Mar 22 2019, 9:31pm | Hey lads it's my first ever IMRA race tomorrow and just wondering do I have to print out the confirmation emails I got when registering and paying for the race or can I just show it in my phone? It's just my printer has decided not to work!! Thanks |

Warren Swords | Mar 23 2019, 5:50pm | Big thanks to Mick and all the volunteers today. Fantastic race as usual. Huge undertaking to put it on and it went so smoothly. Great race day conditions on a mostly dry course. The descent off Djouce is always a joy in weather like today. The climb up Prince Williams, less so. Congrats to Killian on the win. |

Karl Milligan | Mar 23 2019, 9:07pm | 1st IMRA race for me ever. Very impressed. Less impressed with the hills :). Organising team are a credit to IMRA. Thanks for the excellent race. Karl |
Mick Hanney | Mar 23 2019, 9:40pm | Results are processing... Thanks to the volunteer team of:- Diarmuid, Joe, Louis, Janet, Una, Henny, Tommy, Laura, Ronan, Alan, Maike and Niamh. To the committee for their support. To Hilary for the lovely and much treasured mugs. To Leopardstown, Stars of Erin GAA and Alpine Coaches for their services. I hope everyone had a great day. Was great to see the smiling faces at the end (amongst the pain) and hear good feedback. All this wouldn't be possible without all the above. |
Conor O'Farrell | Mar 24 2019, 7:58am | Results are now up. If you have an queries, email me at conor<dot>ofarrell<at>imra<dot>ie. Please provide your number and approximate time so that we can locate you on the finisher sheets. |

Barry Minnock | Mar 24 2019, 1:51pm | Thanks to Mick & full crew for a fantastic race. Even the weather was on your side. Super day. Happy with my run, but unfortunately I should be DQ'd from results as I took an unintentional shortcut on the traverse around Maulin on route down to Crone. I took the direct route down, with walkers on the route at the time so I assumed it was the path. I had my suspicion shortly after going astray as path quickly turned from wide to single track & deep down I knew it was good path down to Crone. Should have turned back, but I was in flow and illogically still felt it was WW. Surely IMRA would use the more technical path down? :) Having looked at strava data in the meantime, it obviously was mistake with up to 20 seconds gained. Not material for my result - I finished in the position I would have finished in had I stayed on main fire-road. My apology is to Ruairi as my pace down from Price Willies helped Tom change gear and get back to get 3rd. 20 secs would have meant further down decent to reactivate Tom, which may have been just enough for Ruairi to stay clear. On that basis alone, DQ is fair punishment ... sorry Ruairi! Won't make the same mistake next year ;) |
Ruairí Long | Mar 24 2019, 2:53pm | Great day out. Race report from my point of view posted! With regards to Barry's above post, I understand. It does seem a bit more suitably IMRA-style to take the more interesting short-cuts, but this short cut alone probably didn't lead directly to Tom simply out kicking me at the finish. I appreciate the apology but all is fair in racing (most of the time). I'll leave the DQ conversation to the RD etc. Thanks to everyone involved, and congrats to the winners of course. |
Deirdre Galvin | Mar 24 2019, 3:18pm | Thank you so much for such a well-organised race yesterday. The logistics involved were like sending a country to war; so a huge well done for achieving it all with such apparent ease (even if you were kicking like you know what underneath the surface!!), and an abundance of smiles and support. |
Mary Collins | Mar 24 2019, 3:54pm | Thanks Mick for all the massive behind scenes and pre event work for yesterdays trail run and all your wonderful volunteers. Very well organized. Thanks to Tommy for delivery of the bags and to Hilary for her skillfully made artistic pottery mugs. |
Mick Hanney | Mar 24 2019, 3:58pm | Sorry to hear you went off course Barry and thanks for coming forward with that. I'll unhappily ask the records secretary to progress to DSQ. That's a real pity. That short-cut has been used in a no. of races over the races. That said I was clear at the outset re: no shortcuts or cutting zig zags :-( Re: the race, I'll do a lessons learned piece for the committee afterwards. One thing I know we can improve on is the finish line logistics / parking at finish. But unhelpfully some runners supporters choose to defy the instructions given to avoid parking in the GAA - both inside and also directly outside which led to traffic congestion. Not only that but the cars I saw parked in the GAA in a really bad spot blocking access for other cars and runners. We should have marshals monitoring access to the car park the future to help this out. I would recommend that runners who defy RD instructions like this are liable to a race DSQ - I cannot offhand identify who they were. I had told the GAA that we would only have minimal parking there for core volunteers. The extra cars made it difficult and things like that can make it tricky for us to continue getting support from venues. For me that was a disappointment on an otherwise positive day. |
Peter O'Farrell | Mar 24 2019, 5:16pm | Mick, the races appeared to go off really well yesterday. As an interested observer of yesterdays logistics I think yourself, Richard and your team did a fantastic job within the given constraints of an active GAA club and you should be well pleased. Moving the finish to the first GAP entrance and making use of their very large parking field (to the right as you enter) might be better in terms of congestion? |
JUDITH ROBINSON | Mar 24 2019, 5:23pm | Thanks to Mick and his team...…...a very well organised event from start to finish...… Murlough AC Co. Down. |
Brendan Lawlor | Mar 24 2019, 5:25pm | Hi Peter and Mick I had the same thought myself. The GAP works very well for Run the Line and Walk the Line. The owner may be interested in facilitating the race providing his core mountain biking activity is not inconvenienced too much Certainly worth looking into and the MR lads have a good relationship with him. Maike was possibly talking to him too for her race before the weather intervened |
Mick Hanney | Mar 24 2019, 5:54pm | Re:GAP, that was my first port of call in the logistics preparation for the event, but unfortunately they couldn't support us this time. We can always ask again. We will always endeavour to learn. The Christmas Tree farm adjacent to the GAA is a possible option for overflow parking. Building work at GAA limited space. Once that's done it might be possible to run the finish line a bit down onto the grass (if no matches were on). |
Barry Minnock | Mar 24 2019, 6:33pm | Right call Mick re DQ. Will teach me to research course properly in advance & listen to race briefing, whoops :) My pre-race research was against a bad strava file - was also expecting another 500m at end ... Logistically the Trail race is tough. Hard to get perfect places for high-volume parking up the hills. Johnny Foxes was also full to the brim. Super job to all involved - there will always be folk who don't follow rules :) Bus from closeby to GAA might have been idea to avoid spectators driving up ... The course has changed a few times, so easy move finish line. There is parking behind National School also which may be an option. |
Richard Nunan | Mar 24 2019, 6:57pm | Thanks for the feedback, the GAA is a super venue and as Mick said easily marshaled. The GAA management are pretty sound people and they were happy with how it all went in the end. I would say the Gap is out for a Sat afternoon. Better colaboration will be needed from runners - but look its only a few - We had asked Trail runners not to park in Johnny foxes, but they still did, not at Ballinastoe, they still did. We asked ultra runners not to leave bags at half way they did, We asked them not to take early starts if they didnt need to, they did. But in general we had a great day with some further tweaks for next year. |
Conor O'Farrell | Mar 24 2019, 10:33pm | Hi All I have verified all results and made changes where necessary, for all those who have been in contact. Due to the nature of the race (early, ultra and half)I've had a lot of emails on this. So if you have not heard back from me, or your result has not been amended, please let me know. Con |
Mick Hanney | Mar 25 2019, 8:48am | Thanks a million Conor. |
Andrew Hanney | Mar 26 2019, 8:32am | One small suggestion for next year. It would be good to let people leave stuff behind in Ballinastoe that could be brought back to the start. Standing around in running gear for an hour before the race wasn’t fun. Would’ve been glad of a jumper that’s for sure! |
Elizabeth Wheeler | Mar 26 2019, 3:29pm | Andrew, I agree with you. I have had race starts before where you can wear an old sweater to keep warm and its left in a clothes donation bag at the start line. You don't get it back but you are kept warm before the race and a charity gets all the items. Win win |
Mick Hanney | Mar 26 2019, 7:27pm | Thanks Andrew / Elizabeth - I'll include that idea on the list of things to do for next year. |
