Greg Byrne | May 14 2018, 12:42pm | The 2018 Trail World Championships were held in Penyagolosa, Spain. The course details announced on the day were 86.2km with 4900 of vertical gain. Conditions on the day were warm and humid making management of fluids essential. https://tracedetrail.com/fr/trace/trace/49392 In advance of the race the Spanish team hosted a two week camp in the region and the race favourite Luis Alberto Hernando had run the course five times. This gave an indication of the competition the Irish athletes were up against. Despite the preparation, the winning time was still 25 minutes slower than that predicted by the organisers. First home for the Irish was Paddy O’Leary racing hard for 26th place overall. First of the ladies was Yvonne Naughton, just ahead of Carol Morgan. All 7 selected Irish runners finished the race and were welcomed home by Irish international mountain runner Eoin Flynn who was finishing line compère for the event. Well done all. Finish times were: 1. Luis Alberto HERNANDO - TEAM SPAIN – 08 hrs 38 min 2. Cristofer CLEMENTE - TEAM SPAIN – 08 hrs 46 min 3. Thomas EVANS - TEAM UNITED KINGDOM – 08 hrs 49 mins … 26.
