- Route Description:
- Knocknarea fundraiser for Octavious 'Ocky' Job. The proceeds of this race will be donated to the Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team following the tragic death of Ocky Job last month. Ocky was an IMRA member who had taken part in recent West League races and was a valued and much loved member of Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team. This route will take you on a couple of climbs of Knocknarea and will be fully marked. The first climb takes runners from the tourist carpark at the back of the mountain up the normal tourist route. However, once through thr gate and onto the open mountain the runners veer right following a path beside a wall which eventually leads to the summit Cairn via a climb from the North side. Running around the front of the Cairn runners take a path just to the right of the main tourist path which leads to a descent down a gulley. Reaching the bottom there is a fence and runners turn right here and head towards the warriors run upper climb but from the opposite direction. After a couple of minutes running it's time to climb again and runners follow the warriors climb first steeply before traversing the grassy heathery bowl and reaching a stone wall. Here its all the way up until the cairn becomes visible again. Past the cairn and the descent retraces the initial climb route. There is a slight variation at the finish: at the end of the tourust trail the route turns immediately onto the adjacent Rathcarrick trail for 200 meters. This is to move any sprint finsishes onto a safer surface! The Short Course Option is approximately 4km and follows the race route to the Cairn and Back the same way. This is also the Junior Route.
- Getting There:
- Race starts and finishes at large main Knocknarea Tourist (tarmac) carpark. Find in Google maps as 'Knocknarea Hill Walk Carpark'. Follow signs for Strandhill and then Knocknarea.
- Prizegiving Location:
- Prizegiving and refreshments will be at the finish line at Knocknarea Hill walk carpark.
Volunteers (Non-Running)
You need to have done 2 non-running volunteer roles in a calendar year to qualify for end of year prize
Volunteers (Running)
Check with race director if they have a need for people volunteering and running. Race directors need a minimum number of people available throughout the race to make the race work so non-running volunteers are preferable. While it can be helpful, volunteering in a volunteer and race capacity does not count towards qualifying for end of year prize
