Route Description:
A varied route, with about 9km on single track trails, 8.5km on forest roads and the rest on quiet country roads. See maps and elevation profile, and interactive map

The route begins in Knockanroe Woods before a boggy out-and-back section of Silvermines Mountain ridge, with views of the now disused mines on one side, and a preview of Keeper Hill on the other. Once back in the forest, the route follows a narrow trail on a very steep descent (trail running shoes are highly recommended) onto a road running alongside the Mulkear River. A right turn off the road begins the climb to the cairn at the top of Keeper Hill. With over 450m gained in 3km, and a mix of grassy paths, stony tracks, dark forest, and open mountain this is the toughest part of the route. The cairn (and communications mast...) is at 694m with views in all directions. From here to Killoscully is almost 9km and almost all downhill! The downhill starts on forest road into Ballyhourigan forest, and then heads off-road onto mucky and grassy trails, before levelling out when reaching the road. The final section into Killoscully follows an old-mass path that has been restored by the local community. Note that roads are not closed so rules of the road apply.

For safety reasons it is mandatory to bring and carry:

Any competitor seen not carrying these at any stage in the race will be disqualified!

Leave No Trace

We have Coillte and local permission for this great event so please respect the course. No bottles, gel wrappers etc. are to be discarded. Please report any littering.

Water/aid station

There will be a water station with some snacks near the 10km mark. There won't be any cups so if you wish to take water, you will need to carry your own bottle (this is to discourage littering). This is a top up, be aware that you should be self-sufficient during the race. We'll try to keep stocked but please don't rely on this station as your only food/drink.

After the race

A hot meal and dessert will be served to every competitor at the end of the race in the Killoscully Community Hall. There are prizes for 1st three men and women (€100, €50, €25) and some extra spot prizes too, very kindly supported by Planet Tri sports store in Killaloe.

Volunteers (Running)

Check with race director if they have a need for people volunteering and running. Race directors need a minimum number of people available throughout the race to make the race work so non-running volunteers are preferable. While it can be helpful, volunteering in a volunteer and race capacity does not count towards qualifying for end of year prize
