Wicklow Round Registration

AuthorDateMessage
William WhitfieldJul 12 2025, 2:20pmHi, myself (Bill Whitfield) and my Friend Colin Dockery, are looking to attempt a Wicklow round next week and wondered how you register an attempt please. No information regarding this on the rules page just the fact you have to do it (and presumably get a tracker from someone)? Any help in this respect gratefully appreciated. Regards , Bill

PS : I am planning to travel to Ireland this Sunday morning 13th July
Niall GibneyJul 13 2025, 1:01pmBest of luck ! Think you just need to post on this forum your proposed start time / date of attempt and away you go ! I got my tracker from primal tracking but as far as i know IMRA have some that you can use for the round .
William WhitfieldJul 15 2025, 1:45pmThanks Niall, appreciate that. Here goes.

I hope it all goes well for you and that the weather holds out.

I think I met you heading up Carrigvore on a recee a few months ago ;)

Enjoy the adventure.
Richard NunanJul 15 2025, 11:50pmBest of luck lads. Its a bit of a jungle out there.

Enjoy !
William WhitfieldJul 18 2025, 11:51amHi Richard, our horticultural skills were not up to it!.....hahaha. Regards, Bill
Pól Ó MurchúJul 18 2025, 1:17pmSorry to hear that Bill. How did it go in general? It’s tough finding the right time. Weather at the moment and ground conditions would seem quite good in most areas and a lot of daylight this time of year but the ferns, heather and other plants are in full bloom making some of the usual tracks and trails quite difficult to see or pass through.
William WhitfieldJul 18 2025, 2:30pmHi Pol, the weather was good in general but we had some high level 'Map Muppetry' (From me!) and some nav issues in very poor viz at night that slowed us down, again we didn't have much slack in the equation to spend on self induced errors which we couldn't physically claw back. The final straw was the impenetrable 6ft + tall foliage going steeply down to Inchavore with the worst of the foliage challenging ascents and decents still to come.....

It was interesting.
Takeaways

Weather was good and I needed it to be good to get round, but deep fog & clag for first 3 hrs, 3ft Viz in places. Could only see your feet. e.g. we could clearly hear the 'hum' from the electricity gen station at the top of Kippure but could only just see the red light on the top at approx 150m from the mast.

1) Not fit enough
2) Night time nav poor in low viz
3) Need to stand up more....Fell over a dozen times before the 3rd peak Gravale and was approx 30 min behind schedule at that point
4) this is a biggy...Dropped map on east peak of Mullaghcleevaun but didn't realise I'd dropped it till I got to Actual Mullaghcleevaun summit, and we went back to find it (Thanks to Colin for spotting it). Lost shed load of time there and probably the round but thought why not carry on and see the round through. The sun was out hurrah!....:)

5) Finally stopped by triffid like vegetation at mile 58 descending into Inchavore at head of Lough dan.... Decided if it was that bad there with bracken 1ft over my head on very steep ground,,, we would be in for some severe gardening duty very soon further on so binned it 21 hrs in and Proceeded to walk 18km back to the van at Wicklow Gap arriving at 0510am after two kips on the grass verge along the way.
Brilliant

We will be back.:)
