Miriam Maher | Feb 16 2025, 9:56pm | The IMRA committee has appointed the following people to roles supporting the executive committee and the IMRA community. Kate Flynn has now been formally appointed as our Communications Officer. This is formalising Kate’s role within IMRA. She has been looking after our social media accounts for a few years now and has supported us on various communications measures. Kate will continue doing this, while also working with the committee on IMRA wide communications on the Forum, News items and our social media platforms. Stuart Scott has successfully convinced Ailbhe Donnellan and Hugh McDowell to support him as Assistant Treasurers! Stuart’s remit is widespread and considerable in volume. Ailbhe and Hugh’s support will be invaluable to him in dealing with the high volume of financial transactions that we process within IMRA for our races and background functions. Congratulations and thanks to Kate, Ailbhe and Hugh for taking on these roles. I’m like a broken record on this…but IMRA is nothing without its volunteers. Miriam |
Conor Murphy | Mar 6 2025, 10:53am | I had wondered what became of the Communications Subgroup. With the Munster AGM saying race access to the Reeks is gone, and the National Committee speaking of World Championships on the Reeks, there clearly is an issue with communications within IMRA and with members. I know runners here in Kerry who were training for Carrauntoohil and the Skyline. The confusion and months of silence is not fair to them or members. The highest mountains in Ireland are worth a sentence or 2 from the national mountain running association. Hopefully with an Officer in place we can at last get some clarification. |
Richard Nunan | Mar 6 2025, 2:32pm | Hi Conor As I'm the WMRA/AAI representative on the executive committee for IMRA, I'm replying to clarify the context of the reference made in the AGM meeting minutes to World champion events being held in Ireland. At the AGM there was a question raised asking would we consider a WMRA race and we informed the person who asked the question that it's something we look at on an ongoing basis. We held very successful World Masters Championships in 2022 and like the World Cup event in Donegal (2023) we were wondering if the Reeks could facilitate such a race. This summary reference in the AGM minutes, when published, seems to have been picked up and interpreted by you that we are actively planning to hold a World Champs event on the Reeks. To clarify, we are not currently making plans to hold a World championship race on the Reeks, but like yourself we are always dreamin' about it! I think if you change the "is" to an "as" from the extract of the minutes below, that might be a better reflection of the conversation. These are the minutes again for reference: "David Power asked if IMRA has any long-term plans to bring international races to Ireland. Richard Nunan says we are considering this all the time. He and Eoin Keith are always thinking of possible World Championship races in Ireland and the Reeks Skyline is a possibility." Cheers Richard |
Conor Murphy | Mar 13 2025, 7:27am | Dreaming about World Championships is good, albeit that the question was about plans not dreams. But the significant part of your response was the reference to the Skyline. At the Munster AGM on the 18th October, members were told that race access to Carrauntoohil and the Reeks was lost. This was not mentioned at the National AGM over a month later, in the debate about removing access from the Constitution and in the President's Address. You seemed unaware that there would be no Skyline. When did the National Organisation find out about this issue? This is not some obscure race on some random hill, held once or twice. This was our most significant mountain race with so much history, along with other races on our highest range, When did HQ find out they were gone? |
