Garmins and GPS issues today

Jeff Swords | Jan 28 2025, 12:20pm | People probably read here more than they do the official or non official Garmin forums but I was reading one of them this afternoon and spotted that there's a widespread issue with some of their watches going into boot loops when trying to do an activity that uses GPS (seems to be mostly Forerunners, Fenix and some of the newer Venus at the moment running on some of the more recent firmware) So if you're planning on a lunch or afternoon run hold off using GPS. If your watch has already gone a bit nuts there's steps on their product forums with how to get it out of the loop, basically a hard reset. |
Eoin Keith | Jan 28 2025, 12:39pm | The bug seems to infect most of the high end expensive Garmin watches (Fenix, Enduro, Epix). I've experienced it mid-race (twice in the same race). A hefty chunk of the Spine racers from last week experienced it too, from reading their FB posts. It tends to manifest itself after many hours, so if you're not an ultra runner you're less likely to encounter it. Word on the street is Garmin have finally acknowledged it, and have a fix on the way. The bug seems to have arrived with a recent software update. Apparently a factory reset will clear it if you have no patience to wait for the official bug-fix from Garmin to arrive. |
Andrew Moore | Jan 28 2025, 12:40pm | I have experienced this in the last few weeks. And did a reset yesterday to send a report to garmin But ran today with a route and gps, and no crash occurred. But then again it was only a shorter run. |
Jeff Swords | Jan 28 2025, 12:47pm | @Eoin and @Andrew, this seems to be a slightly different one which might be related to a corrupt GPS related file being pushed out, as people are getting it doing anything on their watch that causes it to look for a GPS signal, as soon as it tries to find one it goes into the boot loop. |

Éanna Whelan | Jan 28 2025, 1:58pm | Hey Folks, I had this issue today with my Forerunner 955. The fix was: Hold the Light button (top let button) for 30 seconds to turn off watch. Press Light button again to turn watch back on. When you see the blue triangle appear on screen, hold the Start/Stop (top right) and Back (bottom right) buttons at the same time. When you hear the 1st beep, release the top right button. When you hear the 2nd beep, release the bottom right button. The watch will then do a reset, and load your settings from a stored backup if one exits. For some reason my stored backup didn't include the layout of my watch face, and seems to have forgotten all my run times. I just got back from a very average 10k and my watch tells me it's my new 10k PB. Thankfully all stats are stored on Strava! |
Jeff Swords | Jan 28 2025, 2:07pm | After every hard reset or even software update Garmin's will tell you everything you do is a new record. Did you not get the issue again after you done your reset? There's people saying that when they reset and try a GPS activity again it just goes back into the loop again. |
Éanna Whelan | Jan 28 2025, 2:37pm | Hey Jeff, No it cured the issue thankfully! Went for a run straight after the reset and no issue. It did take a solid 8 or 9 minutes for my watch to find its GPS signal though. |
Daniel O'Brien | Jan 28 2025, 9:55pm | The same happened me today - Garmin forums a minefield, but the above instructions worked a treat - thanking you !! |
Michael McSweeney | Jan 28 2025, 10:35pm | So if you run today. With no Garmin coverage. Did you really run??? |
Stuart Scott | Jan 29 2025, 10:54am | I haven't experienced any issues but given my diminishing speed, I think I'll do a reset anyway and enjoy some new "records". Thanks! |
Theresa Cunningham | Jan 29 2025, 12:08pm | Iv turned my garmin forerunner off and tried the steps they recommended but now it won’t pair with my phone iv tried several times and gave up ! Any suggestions? |
Jeff Swords | Jan 29 2025, 12:23pm | Sounds like you may have hard reset your watch so go into Garmin Connect and remove it from the devices menu and re-add it again. |
Theresa Cunningham | Jan 30 2025, 6:46am | Thank you very much Geoff I really appreciate you taking time to respond to my query, il try that and see what happens! Regards Theresa |
