Miriam MaherNov 21 2024, 8:38amHuge congratulations to Enda Cloake, the very worthy recipient of the Athletics Ireland Irish Mountain Runner of the Year at the annual awards lunch yesterday.

Enda was nominated by IMRA for this award in recognition of his very impressive performances on the hills and mountains of Ireland and on the International stage this year.

Enda has now represented Ireland at Europe and and World Championships since 2021 with increasingly impressive and strong performances each year. This year he led his team home with a strong 43rd place finish in a stacked field. His finish time was under 6 hours, covering a route of 58km with over 3,500 m elevation gain. This finish time was a full hour faster than his personal aim for the race.

At home, Enda generally won or gain a podium place in all IMRA races he took on. But Enda is also a significant contributor to IMRA, volunteering regularly. He is an active member of the junior development coaching team, acting as an excellent role model to our junior runners.

Enda is nominated by IMRA for this award primarily for his talent and high performance, however overall he embodies a lot of the values of our organisation and we welcomed the opportunity to recognises his significant achievements this year.

Maybe we all need to train up at Hellfire!
Warren SwordsNov 21 2024, 9:01amWell done Enda. Well deserved.
Brian KitsonNov 21 2024, 1:54pmBy my count, Enda won 16 of the 22 solo races he raced this year. This is an astonishing win rate of 72%.

(Incidentally, he ran against me in seven of those 22 races. Although by the time I crossed the line in each of these races he was already in the pub eating sangwiches blissfully unaware of the mid-packer battle I was desperately trying not to lose, I’d like to think my hot pursuit drove him on to his success.

There may be no basis for me to believe this but I’d like to think it all the same.)

Congrats again, Enda (we did it).
