Building on the great success of last year's tree planting event, we have organised another event to utilise the carbon offset contributions made by IMRA members in 2023. Thank you to all those that selected the carbon offset contribution when purchasing race events in 2023. That option is still there for all races this year, with the recent enhancement put in place by Eoin Keith, Webmaster. Now you can choose to purchase a carbon offset contribution in three amounts - €1, €10 and €25

Details of this year's tree planting event:

Date: Saturday, February,3rd, 2024

Location: Carrigoona Commons, Kilmacanogue, Bray, Co. Wicklow.
Logistics : We are suggesting that for anyone interested in a short run beforehand, we meet at Kilmacanogue Car park at 8.30 am for a short run (6km) around the Sugarloaf, - or meet up at 9.30 a.m at the same car park. We will then organise carpooling to the location selected for the tree planting. Please note that this is absolutely necessary because parking is very very tight at the selection picked.

Tree planting: Between 10 am - 12 pm we will carry out tree planting under the direction of Robert Moore ( Gold medalist -Bloom 2023 and IMRA runner)

What you need to bring: A spade (not a shovel), gloves and wrap up for the elements - jacket, hats and scarves as necessary

What are we planting: 500 native trees, sponsored by Coillte and a grant from Wicklow County Council..

Just to note that there is a bit of work in clearing back the bracken and we will be planting the trees at various locations on the mountain. Last year our local Pure Mile group together with Kilmacanogue cubs planted 350 native trees which have shown a 70% survival rate. We will be using stakes and tubex covers to stop the wind and the deer destroying our efforts-along with mesh tree guards.

Followed with hot food and drinks at our house in Kilmacanogue as the pub doesn't exist anymore eircode - A98EP93

As always with any outdoor event, this is weather dependent.

All we need from you is your time and efforts, aside from the sponsorship provided, IMRA is covering the costs of the event and the refreshments.

There is also tree maintenance jobs for those of you not handy with a sledge hammer ( for the stakes) and spades!
yours Angela - (the tree advocate -that was how I was addressed in the email back from Wicklow County Council!)
Angela FlynnFeb 1 2024, 9:55amA big thank you to all the volunteers who have signed up to plant trees this weekend. Looking forward to seeing you all. There will be a bit of car parking management as we will start planting in one area and move around the mountain to various other sites that are suitable for planting - rain is in fact helpful to the trees so we will be planting in whatever weather we get. Bring a change of clothes and wear boots if you have them.
People have the option of writing the name of a remembered loved on on the stake attached to the tree on the day if they so choose and we will have few markers with us for that.
Alan KennedyFeb 3 2024, 2:40pmGreat morning in Kilmac despite to drizzly rain which couldn’t dampen down the enthusiasm of all the helpers which aged from 6 to over 70 (sorry Joe). But the curry and cheesecake after in Chez Flynn was worth all the blisters!! Well done to Anglea, Paul, Kate and others for organising this again and for hosting the afters.
