Rene BorgJul 31 2023, 12:14pmAthletics Wicklow are hosting their second county championship on 19th of August as part of the joint Glendalough AC/Laragh GFC fund-raiser: Run the Ridge 20k / Derrybawn Woods 10k.

Wicklow club athletes can enter on MyRunResults for a 5 euro reduced fee: https://myrunresults.com/events/wicklow_athletics_offroad_championship_2023/4793/details
(20k entry for club athletes closes at midnight tonight)

There is a team competition - teams will be submitted direclty to the organiser by the Athletics Wicklow secretary so please liaise directly with them if you are gunning for a team medal.

IMRA runners who are not Wicklow athletes can register on a separate site: https://worldsmarathons.com/marathon/run-the-ridge (20 km tickets currently sold out, but we hope to be able to release a few tomorrow if Wicklow Athletics do not take up full allotment by midnight).

All proceeds from the county championship tickets go to Athletics Wicklow and all proceeds from the open tickets go jointly to the venue hosts Laragh GFC/Glendalough AC.

Two junior races are planned: 2 km for 11-15 years old and 3 km for 16-19 year olds. Like for seniors those from Wicklow clubs register on MyRunResults and those not AAI registered or running for non-Wicklow clubs register on WorldsMarathons>

We hope to see some of you there for a warm Laragh welcome.

Rene BorgAug 21 2023, 4:28pmAs the dust settles on the 2nd Athletics Wicklow Off-Road Championship and the 6th 'Run the Ridge', a full report on the action in the link below.

Among many highlights were the two new course records (Ed O'Connor on the 20k and Sile O'Byrne with a new women's record on the 10 km distance), the inclusion of a new junior race, record numbers for the event despite the weather related issues.

Nine Wicklow clubs competed for 73 medals. As hosts, we in Glendalough were delighted to take a rare (and narrow) win over defending champions Parnell with Lakeshore Striders again showing they are great on the trails finishing 3rd. We hope the enticement of 'winning back' the new trophy means an even bigger County Championship next year and that non-Wicklow athletes will join us to keep ramping up both the competition at all ends of the field.

Rene BorgJul 4 2024, 1:20pmThe Athletics Wicklow Off-Road Running Championship returns on the 17th of August and once again as part of the joint Glendalough AC/Laragh GFC fund-raiser: Run the Ridge 20k / Derrybawn Woods 10k.

Both County Championship and Open Category runners can register on the same site this year: https://worldsmarathons.com/marathon/run-the-ridge

Juveniles of 17 years and older can compete in the 10 km race with 11-16 year olds competing on a 3 km course.

Most 20 km tickets are already gone as we only have a permit for 100 people on the Derrybawn ridge, so we encourage anyone interested in particular to try the 10 km which is a lovely straightforward route with some nice views of the ridge.

Open race runners will compete for (modest) cash prizes (championship runners are eligible to win the open race) with Championship runners competing for individual medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze) in 5-year categories as well as team category medals (10 km race only) - Senior Teams, O35-49 teams and O50 teams. The club with the most medals (by the Olympic system) takes home (for a year!) a beautiful stone trophy produced by Richard Healy and are the reigning County Club Champions for 2024. The event was won by Parnell AC in the first year with Glendalough AC winning in 2023. We expect fierce competition from multiple Wicklow clubs this year.

All proceeds from the county championship tickets go to Athletics Wicklow and all proceeds from the open tickets go jointly to the venue hosts Laragh GFC/Glendalough AC.

We hope to see some of you there for a warm Laragh welcome. We are planning a 10th Year Birthday barbecue for Glendalough AC in Lynhams after - but details are still to be confirmed on this. All will welcome there if it goes ahead as planned.
