The 2023 Irish Champs got off to a cracking start on a sunny dry day in Newcastle with the Slieve Donard race. Well organised by Deon McNeilly with his band of volunteers from Newcastle AC and friends. The oldest hillrun in Ireland hosted not only itself but also a NIMRA champs round and the first race of IMRA’s Irish Championships.
Many thanks to Newcastle AC for allowing IMRA to piggyback on their race as this ensures that the Irish Championship visits the highest point in all 4 provinces.

Congratulations to the current leaders of the Irish Championships after round 1, Becky Quinn and Andrew Tees. (Results recorded for the Irish Championships are runners with 2023 IMRA membership).

Round 2 brings us to Mweelrea on Saturday the 1st of July and as a brucie bonus you can double up with a race on the Sunday and finish out the Connacht Champs in one weekend.

Note: Should you have raced Slieve Donard without an IMRA 2023 number and now decide to continue in the Irish Champs please sign up for an IMRA 2023 number and we can keep track of your result then.

Round two of the Irish Championships brings the field from the highest point in Ulster over west to the highest point in Connacht - Mweelrea at 814m.
As the race starts on a beach you get to climb all 814m. HUP!

Competition will be fierce, with some having missed Slieve Donard and others looking to follow on from a good start there.

The entry list is a secret known only to the race director - and as RTE might say - only Anne-Marie Flaherty would have all the information.

As a brucie bonus there's camping, BBQ's, romantic sunsets, the hardest 5km in Ireland to follow on the Sunday, Nephin and a full championship wrapped up in a weekend - gotta love Connacht.
Peter O'FarrellJul 24 2023, 7:57pmAfter 3 rounds of the Irish Championship there's a shape starting to form, it could all change again in the mist though!
Should Covid23 happen tomorrow we have 2 finishers - Mark McAdden and Brian Furey seperated by a single point. Hovering with a strong interest in that overall and currently on 2 races (3 to score) we have Andrew Tees and Séan Quirke leading a posse of contenders.
On the ladies side current solo leader on 2 races is Joan Ryan with the aforementioned posse of ladies on 1 race needing both remaining races to finish out the league.
Lugnaquille is possibly the easiest race of the series and so I say - get to it!
Peter O'FarrellAug 16 2023, 2:50pmCongratulations to Joan Ryan and Andrew Tees - Irish Champions for 2023.

In the minor places in the mens category there was to be some last day drama and reshuffling on Galteemore. Sean Quirke was rewarded with the Silver medal for some very fine and consistent running throughout the series and Mark McAdden leap-frogged former Champion Brian Furey for the 3rd podium place.

Five brilliant races and thanks to all the volunteers who made them happen.
