ANDREW Ledwith (Fr. Murphy) won the inaugural Meath hill running championship staged by St. Brigid?s AC over 5 km through the hills of Mullaghmeen Forest outside Oldcastle on Sunday.
Enda Markey led the runners through the first kilometre, before Ledwith took up the running on the climb towards the two-kilometre mark.
On the long decline to the three-kilometre point Declan Monaghan and Johnny Morrissey led out a group that also included Paddy Mangan, Ed O?Connor, Gerard Heery, Ledwith, Tommy Maher and Alan Maye, but by the time the field hit the steepest hill the group was down to two as Ledwith and Heery opened up a sizeable gap.
Ledwith, winner of the Meath cross-country title before Christmas, made his move over the final kilometre and came home a comfortable winner from Heery, with Mangan third and Morrissey fourth. Morrissey also claimed the top junior prize.
Fiona Mahon (Donore Harriers) ran with ease over the hills to take the ladies? title ahead of Linda Gunning and Ann Marie McCluskey.
