Damian McKeever | Sep 24 2006, 4:25pm | Hi There, I am looking into stocking some Trail and Fell running shoes as we seem to be getting some interest. I was hoping you might be able to help me out by letting me know which brands you would rate. inov8 were huge when I worked in New Zealand but don't seem so big over here it's more PB Walsh? Where do you guys currently buy your fell or Trail shoes from? |
gary crossan | Sep 24 2006, 7:06pm | my favourite of road shoe has to be the puma trial fox. these are ideal for most courses i have run this year. they are snug fitting and light enough to race in. i also have a pair of invo 8s 290??? which i got in scotland more suitable when the going gets really heavy. |
Adrian Tucker | Sep 24 2006, 9:03pm | It would be nice to see a wider selection of off-road shoes on the irish market. Walsh PB's are great for certain soft terrain, but wicked on trails ( got the blisters to prove this). Most trail shoes, i.e. asics guts, montrail, and even salomon are good for trail and light off-road work, but not great when the going gets really long, wet, and slippery (lost the toe nails to prove this). There is no shoe that seems to fit all occasions, especially on Irish Hills. Inov8's seem to have a good range that fit somewhere between walshe's and asics guts etc. it would be nice to see them on the Irish market, and I'd certainly give them a test run if the price was right. |
Roisin Mc Donnell | Sep 25 2006, 11:40am | It would be great to see a better selection of off road shoes available here. have tried a few and got a great pair in 53 degees north last year. they are a nike off road shoe..really good grips, tough, really hard wearing and really comfortable. a few people got them last year and found them really good..dont know the actual model sorry..but if you could source them would be great |
cormac o ceallaigh | Sep 26 2006, 7:19am | i agree with Garry, inov8 are superb, i wore them for 2 seasons, they are very comfortable on rocky terrain , i.e Croagh Patrick, wide enough sole, extremely comfortable.I bought my pair 30 mins before the Snowdon race in 2004, and wore them in the race, ran 12 mins faster than the previous year, had no blisters and was flying!-thats a good vote of confidence in them. |
Keith Ward | Sep 26 2006, 9:38am | Hi all, I represent Puma in Ireland and have been trying to source all avenues in terms of trying to get exposure for our out and out trail runnning shoe (Trailfox). Sportsworld in Terenure will stock a limited amount, but I am in the process of sourcing another retailer in Wicklow who may be an option if the demand is there. Some spec on the shoe would be; Waterrepellant ripstop softshell material/air mesh Lycra sock construction Drilex lining Full evergrip outsole & forefoot grooves The shoe itself weighs 290g, so weight is kept to a minumum, to what the shoe is produced for. (Check out recent Irish runner just out on the shelves) Obviously, i would be a little biased, but I would appreciate any feedback!!! |
Marcus Geoghegan | Sep 27 2006, 9:34am | Please try and stock the Inov8 if you can - I have been using these for years for Orienteering and Hill Running and I really like them. Until now I have bought them WWW mail order from the UK, or at UK Orienteering events, but I would prefer to be able to buy them in Ireland. |
Damian McKeever | Sep 27 2006, 1:43pm | Hi all, From all the feedback that I've got from you guys coming into the shop inov8 seem to be a popular choice. The guy from Inov8 is very keen to get stocked in a shop in southern Ireland because at the moment they are only in three shops up north. I think Intially I'll stock some inov8 shoes and the puma Trailfox and see how we got on from there. I will post up here as soon as I have stock in. Thanks again for you feedback it's much appreciated. Damian. |
Jim Fitzharris | Oct 4 2006, 5:24pm | Damian, Sorry for coming to this thread late. Can you give us your email address? I have a few thoughts but I would prefer to keep them offline (to minimise the amount of "commercial" traffic on the forum). Thanks, Jim. |
Damian McKeever | Oct 4 2006, 8:39pm | Hi Jim, Sure drop me a mail at damian@amphibianking.ie Cheers, Damian. |
Paul Mahon | Oct 5 2006, 8:20am | I have tried a variety at hill runs, O and AR event in the past and it is a case of no one shoe fits all. PB's have great grip when new but no cushioning and tend to disintegrate after a season or so of hard use. Solomon shoes in general have been the shoe of choice for AR in the past due to their durability, easy lacing system and the protection offered to the foot particularly in rough conditions but I have found them v slippy on wet rock in particular though I gather that the more trail/ fell running Harrier model is better in this regard. Inov 8 are a great out and out fell running shoe particularly in the muck and I believe that the problem w heel blisters found in the earliest model, of which I have pair, is now "cured". Their range has been expanded to offer a variety of shoes but the Fell runner/ Performance/ AR rather that the recreational trail runner is the target market I believe. The Nike Gortex off road shoe mentioned above is as recommended to me by Peter O Farrell earlier this year and I have found it the best for all round usefulness. Has sufficient cushioning to be used on roads or trails, has gortex upper to keep feet dry in non quagmire conditions and the grip provided in all conditions is the best I have ever had on a shoe (apart from a climbing shoe!). Seems that they must use a softer rubber on the sole which may wear away a bit quicker than other models when used in aggressive conditions but they have lasted me through all lengths of races and conditions and have the similar quick lacing system to that found on the Salomons. Only problem is where to find them in Ireland. 53deg N had them but now only in sizes 5 and smaller I hear. Comes in rather bright Red and Yellow options which may be off putting for the fashion concious amongst us :) |
Damian McKeever | Oct 9 2006, 7:25pm | Hey Paul, Thanks for the advice, We are having a look at a few different options at the moment. Obvioulsy I'd love to stock them all but the market been pretty small I need to work out which ones are the most popular. I have a few off road shoes already and am looking at adding 3 inov8's to the range along with the puma Trail fox. I'm currently waiting for the Inov8 tech rep to come over and give me a tech session on their shoes. Thanks for the advice. Damian. |
