Gearoid Towey | Oct 11 2010, 12:29am | Hi All, Just to let folk know that the Art O Neill Challenge will take place on January 7th 2011. Again, its fully supported with lots of TLC in the same format as the 2009 Challenge. The Sports Charitable Trust and Mountain Rescue will benefit from funds raised. There will be three ways to participate: run, hike or a combination of both. Navigation skills will be required for runners. Full details on www.artoneillchallenge.com Hope to see you at Dublin Castle on a "fresh" January evening!! Gearoid |
gearoid towey | Oct 11 2010, 9:50am | For first timers i would recommend doing the Moonlight Walk in January as ideal preparation for the Art and as a way of getting hooked on night walking! |
Ken Cowley | Nov 5 2010, 7:45am | Ok, I'm seriously considering doing it this year. One or two possible colleagues too. Many IMRA folk doing it? If the weather's terrible, just how bad is it? Would be great to get some 'reviews' of previous years. Thanks, Ken |
Rene Borg | Nov 5 2010, 8:18am | Adrian Tucker posted a great report on it here: http://www.stuartmangan.org/smangan/default.asp?contentID=9 |
aidan roe | Nov 5 2010, 10:41am | ken myself and alan collins are doing it. been on my tick list for a while, walking or running |
Pól Ó Murchú | Dec 14 2010, 12:54am | Thinking very strongly about this...Who else is doing it? Not sure whether to do the run or just walk. Would most likely prefer to run/walk/run but the only real problem is that the runners start 2 hours after the walkers so likely to take the best part of maybe 2 and a half hours if not more to catch them. That said I guess the start is all on road so fairly straightforward anyway. |
Pól Ó Murchú | Dec 14 2010, 1:40am | Just checking out your results there Ken & Aidan. I reckon we'd be about the same pace or there abouts. Have you registered yet? Are you doing the run of the walk? and Would you be interested in doing as a team/group? |
aidan roe | Dec 14 2010, 7:44am | Pol Havent registered yet, but will do this weekend. my plan is to run the road section and then run/walk the open mountain stage. dont think I have the juice to run the lot (yet). Haven't talked to Al Collins in a couple of weeks but he was up for it when i talked to him last. Would be happy to run as a group. I'll let you know when I've registered. A. |
Kevin O'Riordan | Dec 14 2010, 9:57am | Gearóid said something about a hybrid run/walk at the Basecamp talk a few weeks ago. Not sure do you have to specify this when entering or is it something you can decide on the day. I was thinking about doing the full thing but not sure about my training (or lack thereof) over the past few weeks so I might do the hybrid option. |
aidan roe | Dec 15 2010, 7:16am | Kevin on the webite for entering your give three options. Run(Race), Hybrid (run to Kippure Lodge & then walk) or walk only. A |
BrÃan O'Meara | Dec 15 2010, 10:51am | I reckon it might be worthwhile to walk the first bit and then run from Kippure Lodge on the softer ground. However, from Kippure, (memories of doing this in 2009 - when the ground was thankfully frozen), if the ground is wet, Billy Byrne's gap and the three lakes beyond Art's Cross will be a serious pain in the ass... It might be worth packing a pair of waders, or deviating slightly from the regular route. Alternatively, if there's much more snow, it might be worth investing in snowshoes.. Decisions, decisions... |
