Peter O'Farrell lead a Rathfarnham team in organising the Tibradden race. And they showed they are just as good as organising as they are at winning! It is a great idea for future years to have the various clubs to choose a race or two to organise during year, so hopefully we will see similar organisation from the likes of Clonliffe, Sportsworld, Crusaders, Boards, the orienteering clubs etc in the future!

It turned out to be a lovely warm evening - good conditions for a race. Conditions were dry underfoot, which is just as well with this race although a number of people took a fall with lots of cut knees in evidence at the finish. Diarmuid O'Colmain's nasty looking head wound was not as bad as it first appeared - or so he says anyway!

The race starts up a fire road for nearly a kilometer before heading up a steeper slope up to Tibradden mountain itself. There is then some respite from the climb until you meet the Wicklow way. You then follow the Wicklow Way back towards fairy castle, turning off the Wicklow Way and heading up to fairy castle itself. There is then a downhill section towards the aerials before you turn back towards the Wicklow way. You complete a loop, and follow the Wicklow way back the way you came and on to the finish.

Kevin Bolger had a good win on the night - Kevin was also a part of the victorious Rathfarnham team on the Wicklow Way relay last week. Swiss visitor Likas Lombriser had an impressive second place with Des Kennedy in third place. Jenny McAuley won again in the women's race and Sonja Fuhrmanm was in second. Kate Cronin was in third on her first mountain race in 2011. See the results page for a full list of the category winners, including a very close M40 battle!

Despite the fine evening, it was hard to hang around too long at the finish afterwards - those vicious b*****d midges saw to that. So a big well done to all those who helped out at the finish, especially first aider Jimmy who had his work cut out for him.

Cheers Rathfarnham for hosting a great race!

Tonight’s junior race pitted two M14 athletes Cian Galligan & Cian Rea against the full extent of Tibradden mountain. The runners followed the path to the summit of Tibradden, before following the walking trail to the junction of with the Wicklow Way, upon touching the WW sign they turned for home. First to the sign was Cian Galligan (4th IMRA Season) in 29 mins 15 seconds, followed shortly after by Cian Rea (2nd IMRA Season) in 34 mins 33 seconds, but more importantly 5 seconds ahead of his nearest rival Paula Rea (#734). While veteran Galligan negotiated the ascending runners well to hold onto his lead, impressive Rea opened up a 9 second advantage over Paula to claim the dinner table spoils. All runners crossed the line suitably attired with smiles and midges.
