Medals for mountain runners at Irish SchoolsMountain runners had a good day at the Irish Schools track and field championships at a sunny Tullamore. Claire Brennan (Castleknock) was first into action in the intermediate girls 3000m. Running a well-judged race, she came through for the gold medal on the last lap with a promising time of 10:36. Emma Sharkey (Methodist College Belfast) was 7th in the same race. Claire and Emma will run for Ireland in the International Youths Mountain Running Challenge in Italy in late June.
Kevin Dooney (CBC Monkstown) was next up in the intermediate 1500m steeplechase. Leading for most of the race he eventually had to settle for silver in a time of 4:33. Kevin reappeared hours later in the 3000m and finished a gritty 4th in 9:05. Kevin will run for Ireland in the International Youths Mountain Challenge.
Emmet Jennings (Oatlands) led from gun to tape to win the senior boys 2000m steeplechase in a time of 6:01. Emmet has been pr-selected for the European junior mountain running championships in Bulgaria.
Eoghan Totten (St. Patrick’s Downpatrick) made a significant breakthrough when taking bronze in a very strong senior boys 5000m field in 15:28. Eoghan will run for Ireland in the International Youths Mountain Challenge.
A disappointed Carl Dunne (St. Joseph’s Drogheda) finished 5th in the senior boys 1500m in a race where he never quite found his composure. Carl will run for Ireland in the International Youths Mountain Challenge.
Sinead Cronin (St. Dominic’s Cabra) was 6th in the senior girls 1500m in a time of 4:55. She will be hoping to qualify for the European junior championships team in the trial race on June 13th. Niamh Kearney (Loreto Dalkey) was 4th in the senior girls 800m in 2:18. Fintan Doherty (Castleknock College) was 7th in the intermediate boys 800m in a fast time of 2:01. Elaine Burch was runner-up in the under 16 girls mile race in a time of 5:29.
