The Irish schools mountain running championship was held on a lovely fresh sunny October day in the Phoenix Park. The lap was one mile in length with a run in from the start and to the finish of 70 metres each way. Junior girls had one lap, senior boys had three laps and all other races had two laps. Five runners who competed for Ireland in the British and Irish under 16 and 18 races in Glendalough were here to battle for an Irish title.

First off were the junior girls and this race resulted in a really close team race between Colaiste Iosagain and St. Dominic’s Cabra. Colaiste Iosagain led home by the winner, Doireann Ni Mhaoilleannaigh, edged home by a single point. Next race was the junior boys and Patrick Elliott (Lucan Community college), who ran the under 14 race in Glendalough, led for most of the race for a convincing victory. His time of 12:45 set a benchmark for the following races. Darragh Quinn from Muredach’s College in Mayo made the trip worthwhile by taking the silver medal ahead of Colaiste Eoin runner Liam Mac Giollaphadraig. There was consolation for Colaiste Eoin when they won the team from Blackrock College.

Clare McCarthy (Colaiste Iosagain) was chased on the first lap by fellow international Soracha Humphries but as the race continued the gap widened and the winner ran an excellent time of 13:37. Colaiste Iosagain won the team race. Killian Mooney (Colaiste Eoin) was an odds on favourite for the intermediate boys and he duly obliged in an excellent time of 12:07. Brian Conway (St. Benildus College) ran well to take second ahead of Daniel Broderick (Colaiste Eoin). Colaiste Eoin won the team from Blackrock.

The senior girls race was closely contested with Meghan Ryan (Colaiste Iosagain), Sinead Cronin (St. Dominic’s Cabra) and Maire Ni Chartaigh (Colaiste Iosagain) all mixing it on the first lap. Ryan gradually pulled away to win in 14:15, and led her school to another one point victory over St. Dominic’s Cabra. As in the girls race Stephen Gibney (Wesley College), Fintan Doherty (Castleknock College) and Dean Gillespie (St. Tiernan’s Crossmolina) chased each other on the first two laps before Gibney wore them down on the last lap to win in 18:21. Blackrock College won the team race.

Thanks to the OPW for permission to race in the park, to all of the volunteers especially to Mags Greenan and Leo Mahon, and to Paul Mahon for his finish gantry and for providing most welcome food and beverages at the finish.
