Maulin - Irish Universities Championships
Brief report by Douglas Barry
Persistent misting rain compounded by severe wind on the higher reaches of Maulin mountain made the 2002 Irish Universities Championships a race to be endured rather than enjoyed. However, at the front of the 66 competitors, UCC's Brian Keane really did enjoy it. He moved from second place last year to the outright winner's slot on the podium ahead of Ian O'Neill of the University of Ulster and former junior Irish international Ross Alexander who was representing Waterford Institute of Technology.
Beth McCluskey won the women's race but didn't count in the Universities. Instead, she added to her commanding lead in the Winter league as the race was also the third round in this series with only the races at Prince William's Seat and Tibradden to go. Following a mixup, when one runner led the bunch behind the leaders astray, M50 Joe Feeney found himself the first veteran runner home. Joe couldn't stop smiling afterwards, and we won't mention whose sense of direction failed him!!!
