Barry Minnock wins Leinster novice and leads Rathfarnham to victory with Peter OFarrell (19th) and Turlough Conway (22nd) also scoring. Tom Hogan (Slaneyside) gets bronze medal, Eoin Rowan (Donore) in 4th and Jason O'Byrne in 10th. Aoife Joyce gets a fine 6th.
In the masters mens Mick Byrne had a fine 2nd place from Noel Kelly and Donna Mahon had a great result coming 4th in the womens race, with Zoe Melling in 11th and Vanessa Sallier in 13th.
Michelle Finn wins Munster novice. Italian mountain runner Mauro Lafechi wins mens Munster novice title. Eimear Tangney 3rd in u18 girls and John Harrington 8th in u18 boys. Both ran in British and Irish last weekend. As did Emmet Jennings who won boys u18 in the Gerry Farnham race earlier. Sean Hehir 10th and Donna Mahon 15th in senior races.
James McFadden won the Ulster novice individual title for Letterkenny AC last Sunday. It was a muckfest but a fantastic race .. . Right from the sounding of the starters whistle we saw two athletes, the lightly raced James McFadden from Letterkenny and the durable Spartan from the City of Derry club Declan Reed, go shoulder to shoulder.
And so it remained, as this pair breathed each others air for a full twenty one minutes, as they strode out hip bones touching, giving not an inch, each seeking to hold his ground and rounding the final bend with less than a 100 metres to the finish, one would not care to lay a bet on who would be crowned the champion.
Inside the final 50m and McFadden steals a body width, with every ligament and tendon visibly straining he held on, finishing with 20.52 on the clock to Reeds 20.53.
