Prince William's Seat

It?s hard to believe we are already half way through the 2008 Leinster League with the 6th race taking place at Prince William?s Seat on Wednesday evening. Perhaps next weeks break will be a welcome one after last night?s tough climbs, rocks and mud.

The race organisers had got the keys to Mick?s field again this year and registration was well under way when I arrived. Approx ?230 was raised for St. Vincent de Paul from carparking. With over 100 cars in the field and 185 runners on the night it does n?t take a mathematician to work out that some people are still not availing of carpooling

At 7.30pm sharp we raced out the gate and towards the entrance to the firetrail leading through the woods up to Raven?s Rock. After a couple of kilometres we turned onto a path which lead up through a dark forest. Headtorches would have come in handy last night here where we climbed up the almost vertical track. When we managed to climb into the daylight we continued on to Prince William?s Seat, briefly turning onto the Wicklow Way. The ascent last night was made trickier after the recent rain as runners tried to avoid the small but nasty holes. As we climbed the final fence leading back to the fire-road it was a welcome relief for all. There were a number of casualties on the night, special commiserations to Karen Duggan who appeared to have dislocated her shoulder.

Eoin Keith was first home in a time of 32.21, with Bernard Fortune 2nd and Aaron O?Donoghue 3rd. Aoife Joyce was first of the ladies again this week in a time of 39.57. Sarah Moores was second and Jackie O?Hagan third.

Overall winner Eoin Keith also took M40 in front of Adrian Tucker and Jean Bader took the honours in F40. Martin Francis and Mary Healy took the M/F 50 categories. Roger Moulding and Jean O?Neill were the M/F 60 winners and Charlie O?Connell was first home in the M70s.

A special thanks to the race organisers who not only organised a great race but had also organised a cake sale with loads of goodies for us all in the pub after. Can this become a regular feature??? I heard people ask on the night.

TEAM RESULTS

The absence of Barry Minnock and Peter O'Farrell, respective leaders of the Leinster League and Leinster Champs, a competitive Crusaders team, with four men in the top-20, put up a good fight but once again had to concede defeat to the greens from Rathfarnham. Third was UCD with another stable performance. With 6 races to go, Rathfarnham are sitting solid on 1st place, while everything else is up for grabs.

After last races competitive women's outing, it was again another clean sweep for the women of Crusaders AC who recorded a very low score of 10, placing them well for final victory before the final 6 races. Will a late challenge emerge from the other clubs?
