Robin Bryson won a silver M45 medal at the World Masters mountain running championships in Bludenz Austria last weekend. Three athletes got away at the start and Robin worked his way into second by the 3km mark. However there was no catching the leader on this occasion. Robin had previously won gold and silver medals at M40 level.

Sean Foley in the M45 category (21st, 49.53) and London based Patrick Noonan in the M40 category (34th, 50.12) also had great debut runs at this level.

Around 900 athletes completed the 9.2 km course with a climb of 838m. Next year the European masters in mountain running will be held in Switzerland on June 28th followed by the World Masters in the Czech Republic on September 6th.

There were also some very good performances by runners from Northern Ireland including Deon McNeilly (10th, 45.54), Alan McKibbin (19th, 47.34) and Des Woods (22nd, 48.00) who combined for an excellent 6th in the M40 team race. Fiona Maxwell (5th, 56.09) and Alwynne Shannon (8th, 58.14) were close to the medals in the W45 category. Anne Sandford (20th, 65.27) and Clare Galbraith (22nd, 67.30) also ran well in the W40 race.
