Race Report of Mautherclay:
There was a cheer full atmosphere amongst athletes as we all warmed up before the race. As the Kilcommon festival was getting going around us, music and all sorts of activities were beginning there was certainly a sense of something different from other races taking place. As Tom ( Blackburn) gave a quick race description before the start, with the main point being that there?s a river to cross a couple fences to jump and a 20 ft. turf bank to climb, made easier by the aid of the ladder, it became quite clear to runners that this was different to other hill races. Once tom finished the race began, and we had over 40 athletes racing along a flat grassy field for few hundred metres jumping into a river and continuing on, there was one or two runners I think who were rebaptized or took an early wash at this point as some failed to climb the bank on the first attempt. Any way my self (Martin Bradshaw) and Eoin McKenna forged to the front, we opened up a gap climbing up the forest path, with Tim O Connor, Tom Blackburn, Ross Alexander and Sean Foley in the chasing group. Once we left the forest path by the access of a ladder the running surface quickly turned to very wet and heavy running due to all the rain. At this point Eoin opened up a gap of 20metres as we climbed up the bogie fire brake, this was very tough going, Ross Alexander began to close the gap on Tom Blackburn who was now in third. Mike Cunningham and Joe Ahern were having some fantastic runs as they were locked in there own battle. As the race continued up along a quid path runners were to continue just over the brow of the hill, and then take a sharp right, Eoin who had 30 metres of a lead at this point failed to take the right turn and unfortunately continued on wards, Some fantastic climbing was being done by Sean Foley who is new to hill running passing Tom and Ross to be second to the top followed by Ross, Tom and now Eoin who was closing fast. Off the top Ross and Tom quickly passed Sean on the very run able down hill. Eoin also made in roads on the lead and was quickly in third place with eyes firmly on second, and such was the friendly atmosphere Eoin even wished the best of luck to Tom as he Passed him on a down hill section. However Eoin struggled on a tricky down hill section and was quickly passed by Tom.
At this point the top places were almost decided But unfortunately Ross as he came back on to the forest path went straight in stead of right and crossed the course marking tape and continued on a more difficult route trough over grown trees before coming back to the race course. Even though Ross did not add any great distance to his race, Tom did capitalise on his mistake. Our first Lady home was Deirdre Finn in a time of 64.15 beating home some very able runners. Also our two only junior runners Thomas Blackburn and Becky Hand running very well over a tough course. But Becky who decided to run the entire race length of 8.5km finished ahead of some senior runners, she is certainly a runner for the future.
Huge thanks to the Festival comities that opened up the facilities and provided teas and plenty of food.
