2003 Wicklow Way Relay 
Overall Results - Report by Joe Lalor
On a nice day the Wicklow Way can be very pleasant. In the early stages with its rough mountain paths and forest tracks and later with green lanes and long forgotten country roads. You can make things harder for yourself if you wish by ploughing through waist high heather, bog swallowing slopes or retracing your steps for an hour to get a second look at the view. However such was the way with the second running of The Wicklow Way Relay for many it was simply too easy and had to be improved upon.
The race started at 7.00am in Kilmasogue Forest with 26 teams lining up, but for some the day started much earlier with cars being left stragically along the route for later change-overs. On leg 1 the field was more compact this year and runners were rarely out of sight of other runners. Stage winner was Bob Lawlor with a time six minutes up on last year, this is not as surprising as it may seem as last years stage winner was pacing himself to go on and run a further three stages. 
Stage two, considered by many to be the toughest was very competitive with a fine run by Hugh McLindon to put Team "No Way" in the lead by 9 minutes at the stage end. Stage three, the first leg to be filled on most teams sheets was not the events pivotal point as last year. Team Bayer’s Evin Donnelly was running consistently with his second third spot of the day. "No Ways" lead was cut to 5 minutes after a good run by Dessie Shorten who was to do further damage later in the day. A.G.S. jumped into third place from fifth follow a super run by Clive Glancy a position they were to hold for the rest of the race.
Stage four unfortunately had a WW post missing (it was there for the Glenmacnass race a few weeks ago) at a crucial point where the runners enter Brockagh Wood and one of the many international runners in the event suffered as a result. This brings into focus the advice that runners should previously survey their leg. Declared stage winner John MacEnri gallantly insisted that he be penalised by 5 minutes for going off route and unable to regain the correct path travelled on directly to stage end. This now gives Hugh McLindon his second of two stage wins and moves team " Slow & Steady" into 8th place. At Glendalough Setanta Scalywags were still only about 6 minutes adrift following a brilliant run by Emma Sokell. Team Bayer were holding on to their fourth place
The long climb out of Glendalough up Mullacor and on towards Drumgoff tested any non-hillrunner. However there were some fine runs recorded, most notably by Paul Mahon who exercising last years demons hauled the Scallywag to within
20 seconds of the lead. Flushed with success he went on to run the next leg for Setanta’s Slow and Steady who had an injury loss. The changeover at Drumgoff saw the second mistiming of the day and cost Fingal Vikings some minutes. Here the atmosphere was very jovial despite the rain, helped by Henny’s Mars bars. No way was "No way’s" Gerry Brady relinquishing the lead and by stage end the supervet had the lead restored to two and a half minutes after a fine win over Gary Moralee and John MacEnri completing his third run of the day. 
At the change over at Ironbridge the excitement was building up, how much time would Eoin Keith have over the chasing Scallywags, had he pushed himself too far competing in under a week from finishing the Adrenal Rush in Scotland, would there be a bridge too far between the Ox and Derry River. Dessie was definitely up for it and was biting on the bit before Gary arrived after a good run. And so on to the Derry River where Paddy Lord was dispensing more Mars bars. Dessie not only caught Eoin but put the Scallywags in the lead for the first time and handed over to son Aaron with a surplus of three minutes. All Aaron had to do was to hold this over the 10km into Shillelagh but he had the hero of leg 6 Gerry Brady on his tail, but this time No Way went the wrong way and took a detour courtesy call into a farm yard and the game was up.
Shillelagh was bright and sunny providing a carnival atmosphere outside the Parkview for the finish. As the crowd grew and celebrated the applause for the later finishers got louder and louder. Remarkable all teams finished and by 6.30 a credit to their preparations. A scan of the results revels some remarkable stories most notably Jane and Grahams leaping frog of the 100km course in 10hours 40. As the night progress the bones of next years teams were being put together.
