The British and Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships was held this year on Slieve Gallion in Northern Ireland. This is an annual competition between Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The under 18 Boys and Girls and under 16 Boys and Girls are International races while the under 14 Boys and Girls are open races.

The following is a report on this years event:

<b>Irish Senior Girls come home with Silver medal</b>

Sunday the 8th October dawned cloudy and misty. But by the time the first race started the mist had cleared and the rain was thinking of coming down. Thankfully it thought twice and didn't!

The best of the Irish were the under 18 Girls led home by Rosy Temple (St.Colombas College) closely followed by Maire Ni Amhlaibh (Colaiste Iosagain), Michelle Finn(Colaiste Treasa, Kanturk) and Fiona Slattery(St.Marys College, Arklow) to win the Silver team medal.

Ciaran McKenna(Gormanston College,Meath) had a great individual run to finish in 6th place and with Emmet Jennings(Oatlands College) John Dennis(St.Benildas) and Kian Jennings(Oatlands College) won the under 16 Boys Bronze team medal.

Also having good runs were John Harrington (Maria Immaculate Community College, Dunmanway) 5th in the under 14 Boys race and Treasa Ni Suilleabhan(Maria Immaculate Community College,Dunmanway) 7th in the under 14 Girls race.

Unfortunately the course didn't suit the under 16 Girls and Carol Huet (Loreto College, Foxrock), Ashling Walsh (Loreto College, Foxrock), Theresa Slattery (St.Marys College, Arklow) and Sarah Wilson (St.Colombas College) finished just out of the medals.

The under 18 Boys had to face the mighty England who were the clear favourites for this race.With Conor Dooney (CBC Monkstown) dropping out they kept their heads and Eoin O'Ruadhan (Sligo Grammar School), Eoin Pierce(Cathal Brugha St.D.I.T.) and John O'Sullivan(Gormanston College, Meath) deservedly won the Bronze team medal.

Also running were Mark Rodgers(CBC Monkstown) and Cian Roche(CBC Monkstown) in the under 14 Boys race and Siobhan McCarthy (Maria Immaculate Community College, Dunmanway), Caroline Glynn (St.Peters College, Dunboyne) and Jemma O'Connor(St.Peters College, Dunboyne) in the under 14 Girls race. Geffery Kingston had a good run in the open section of the under 16 Boys race.

So a good week-ends work was done with plenty of experience gained. I hope that nobody was dissappointed in their endeavour and that they keep us in their dairy for next year -- there is always next year!
