IMRA Munster Schools Mountain Running Championships 2006.

Hand And Kennedy Coast Home On Claragh!
The sun shone brightly on the 200 or so athletes who took the Mount Claragh challenge on Wednesday February 22nd in the 7th Annual Munster Schools Mountain Running Championships. Paul Lenehan St Michael?s College Listowel, the pre-race favourite, proved to be no match on this occasion for his arch rival Sam Hand of Colaiste Ioseph, Kilmallock. Hand took his usual dawdle in the opening stages and was led out the Duhallow Trail in the opening stages by the Listowel scholar. Hand progressed steadily and eat into the Lenihan lead on the way up and had things very much in hand at the turning. He was under little pressure there-after and ran his own race to the finish on a time of 18.20 from Lenihan, who finished 2nd a minute behind on 19.20. Local man Michael Twohig of Colaiste Treasa, Kanturk was 3rd finisher on a time of 20.36.
Niamh Kennedy, Ard Scoil Na nDeise, had a spectacular run in the Senior Girls race and has to be the one to watch in 2006. She was in control from the very start and stamped her authority on the proceedings from the off. She led Miriam Cashman of Colaiste Treasa and her school-mate Michelle Mc Carthy at the top and this order prevailed to the line. Kennedy virtually ran her own race throughout to finish on a time of 12.47 to take the gold. She also led her school to Team Gold on the occasion, Great!
Miriam Cashman of Colaiste Treasa , Kanturk, finished 2nd on a time of 14.17 and the 3rd place was filled by Mc Carthy of the Ard Scoil on 14.38.
Up to 90 athletes took part in the Junior Boys race, which has become the norm for this event. This race was well and truly dominated by Maria Immaculata College, Dunmanway, whose athletes were in the reckoning at all stages. Brian Daly led his team-mate, the eventual winner, John Harrington at the top, but dropped back on the way down, to allow Harrington to go on to win on a time of 12.01. His two team-mates, Andrew Ross and Cian O Mahony followed him home on times of 12.03 and 12.09 respectively with Jeoffrey Kingston filling 11th place on 13.22 to enable Mary I. to take the Team honours as well.
Douglas Community School was the one to watch in the Intermediate Boys event where Matt Murphy?s supremacy was always in evidence. He led comfortably at the top and finished strongly on 15.57 leading his team-mate Michael Carroll into 2nd position on 16.48. Douglas also packed extremely well at 1,2,7 and 12 to take Team Gold. Emer Tagney of St Brigids, Killarney had no peers in the Junior girls event despite some un-welcome attention from Una Twohig of Colaiste Treasa, Kanturk who stuck with her to the top to give in there-after to her school-mate Deborah O Keeffe on the descent. O Keeffe and Twohig finished 2nd and 3rd respectively on times of 7.32 and 7.38. All in all it was a superb competition throughout.

Duhallow AC Sponsors The Championships Yet Again!
The organisers wish to thank Mr Donie Shine Chairman, the executive and membership of Duhallow AC for their kind sponsorship of the Championships for the 2nd year in succession. The sponsorship cheque was presented by the Club Treasurer Mr Jer Murphy to the Chairperson of the Munster Region, M/s Kate Moyna, in the GAA Hall during the Medal Presentation ceremony. The organisers are extremely grateful to the club for its generosity.

The Organisers Say Thanks!
The organisers wish to thank Millstreet GAA for the use of its fine facilities, They wish to thank Mrs Kathleen O Riordan, Shane Browne and the ladies who provided the delicious food. A special word of thanks to Mr Jerry and Mrs Ann Marie O Mahony of Inchaleigh, and all the land-owners for the use of their lands. A sincere word of thanks to Duhallow AC Chairman, Donie Shine and Treasurer Jerry Murphy for coming along to assist with stewarding on the day, despite their busy schedules. Our thanks go to Jerry and Rose Twohig without whose help the show could not go on. What can we say about the un-sinkable Mary Ashe that seems enough. Mary, on this occasion, as in others, teamed up as Recorder with Chief Timer Jerry Twohig and allowed the proceedings to flow without a hitch. Of course no course (excusing the pun) is complete unless it is properly marked. For this the organisers thank Duhallow?s Jerry Twomey and Jerry Twohig and Jer Twomey of Charleville who took time out on the previous Sunday to mark the course.
