With the sun shining and a cooling breeze, conditions couldn’t have been better for yesterday’s All Ireland Schools Mountain Running Championships at Kilmashogue, in Co Dublin, which attracted a record number of over 200 from schools all over Ireland.
Among them were Schull in Co Cork, who have started a tradition of travelling as far as Glendalough the day before where they stay in the local hostel.
Making the long journey on the day was Maura Fitzgerald from Castleisland in Co Kerry. It proved worthwhile when she finished second in the junior girl’s race.
From closer to home, Irish junior international Ellen Diskin of Holy Faith Clontarf had a comfortable win in the girl’s senior race. Last year, Ellen missed out on the race when she was stricken with the vomiting bug, but later in the year, won the trial race for the British and Irish Junior International at nearby Three Rock Mountain.
Behind her on the fast 2.5km course, Leslie Ann Dunne and Maire Nic Amhlaoibh were ensuring that Colaiste Iosagain took the team medals ahead of Holy Faith Clontarf, whose second runner Becky Woods finished fourth.
Over the longer distance of 4.5km, Eoin McCormack (St Benildus) controlled the senior boy’s race from the start, despite the best efforts of last year’s first two, Eoin Callaghan (Gormanston) and Stephen Lynch (Douglas CC).
McCormack finished about half a minute clear of Callaghan, and with Cathal Jenkinson fourth and JJ Kelly fifth, St Benildus also finished first team ahead of last year’s champions, Douglas CC.
It was a good day for the Kilmacud school, with another individual and team victory in the intermediate boy’s race, won by Robert Corbally from Craig Murphy from Douglas.
Only in the junior 2.5k race were they bested, when the well-drilled Willow Park squad .got home all four of their runners in the top eleven. Winning the race was Peter Fitzsimons of St Mark’s in Tallaght.
Ard Scoil na nDeise from Dungarvan dominated the girl’s junior and inter races, with Michelle McCarthy taking gold in the junior race and Niamh Kennedy best at inter level. *Full results at
