When we saw the early autumnal dusk lapping hungrily at the forest shrouded trails of Butter Mountain, we knew that the fickle summer of 2005 had gone. It officially passed into history as the last of IMRA?s Wednesday night races was won in a canter by New Zealand bound Kevin Keane, ahead of John Farrelly and another New Zealand bound athlete - junior Ciaran Fitzpatrick. Aisling Coppinger won the women?s section ahead of Fidelma Ayres and Deirdre Horan.

Even though there were one or two moans at the ?sameness? of the track, the course gave some people a little bit of extra, and unexpected, excitement. These unfortunates took a wrong turning and wandered off the course into the pine sea, but eventually everyone, bar one, rediscovered the route and made their way back to the finish. However, that didn?t stop some of them claiming ?If only I hadn?t gone wrong, I could have...? Ah yes.

John Farrelly was best M40 vet, Fidelma Ayres was best F40, and Vivian O?Gorman took the M50 class. The best in the over 60 classes were the fleetfooted Eddie Hughes and Caitlin Bent while young James Alexander M14 had a good run to finish in 58.07. Thanks to Joe Lalor who marked and marshalled the race, and to everybody who helped in the Trail League, a special thanks for your time and efforts.
