The Earl's Drive Trail Race - the first of the currently controversial trail league, is it the last trail league series?? The debate rages. Anyway, the elusive summer weather of 2005 made a windy return to Wicklow and the threatened rain decided to suck it in and wait, so 110 runners lined up in the doldrums of the peak holiday season to do battle - including 14 new ones. Can't deter them, can we!

The fancied whippet Gearoid Towey (overheard "I told you he'd win. I did. I told you!) held off Eoin Keith and vet John Farrelly in a tight battle over a dry course that has suffered from some slight changes due to felling. Vanessa Laurenson took the women's race with 40 seconds to spare from Aisling Coppinger while Zoe Melling edged out Fidelma Ayres for third after a ding dong battle.

Pints were consumed afterwards and thanks must go out to all volunteers who helped. Take a bow, Claire Walsh, Michael Galligan, Kevin Keane, John Shiels, Fidelma Ayres, and everybody else who mucked in on the night.

Next Wednesday is another night!
