Munster Schools Mountain Running Championships 2005 Report.Lenihan And Twohig On Song On Claragh!
There was strong competition in all categories from the 200 plus entry for the Munster Schools Mountain Running Championships on Mount Claragh, Millstreet on February 23rd. Experience was the key in the case of Paul Lenihan of St Michael’s College , Listowel, in the Senior Boys category. He took control from the very start and maintained constant pressure to the very top where he was joined by Stephen Lynch of Douglas Community College and Patrick Hartnett of St Brogan’s College, Bandon with a huge gap back to Colin Mc Grath of Dungarvan CBS, who led the chasing pack. With the pecking order decided at this point , Lenihan had no further worries. He descended at his ease in total control and finished strongly on 18.31 with 18 seconds to spare on Stephen Lynch, who came in on 18.49. Patrick Hartnett finished a further 11 seconds behind in 3rd place.
Rose Twohig of Colaiste Treasa, Kanturk, showed her un-doubted class in the Senior Girls Category, when she finished strongly on 13.31 with 54 seconds to spare on her team-mate Carol Finn who came in on 14.25. RoseTwohig had all the work done on reaching the summit and was well ahead at that point. Carol Finn in turn had a further minute in hand at the top on Sinead Kelly of Ard Scoil Na nDeise who led the chasing bunch that included team-mates Meabhdh Westwood and Gwen Creamers of Schull Community College. This configuration remained intact to the finishing line.
Sam Hand , Scoil Iosaef , Kilmallock, Munster Junior League Champion 2004, had a superb run in the Intermediate Boys despite his trade-mark pedestrian start, which left him well back the field on the way out the Duhallow Trail. He worked his way up progressively, how-ever and had matters well in hand soon after the turning. It was plain sailing for him there-after and he coasted home on a time of 14.35 with 5 seconds in hand over John Hurley of St Brogan’s who finished on 14.40. Michael Hurley of St Brogan’s was a further 6 seconds behind in third place on a time of 14.46.
We saw a nail-biting finish in the Intermediate Girls between team-mates Michelle Finn and Michelle Twohig of Colaiste Treasa. A mere second separated them on the line when M/s Finn took the gold on a time of 9.54 from M/s Twohig who was forced to settle for silver on a time of 9.55. Third place was filled by Shona Curran of Ard Scoil Na nDeise on a time of 10.06. Jenny Hurley of Ard Scoil Na nDeise was never under threat in the Junior Girls despite the occasional skirmish with Maire Fitzgerald St Joseph’s, Castleisland. She finished strongly on 7..31 with 6 seconds to spare on the Kerry girl. Michael of Douglas was the one to watch in the Junior Boys race. He was chased to the top by Danny O Donovan of St Fachtna’s DLS, Skibbereen, who suffered severely in the process and was overtaken and passed by Denis Finn of Colaiste Treasa, Kanturk on the descent, a pecking order which prevailed to the line.
