Lenihan Makes It look Easy Yet Again !

It was, will he or wont he, on the run up to Crohaun 2004. We heard he was coming, but he said he was not. He then told us he might and he did . The Lenihan mystique lives on and the man just ups the tempo with every race and Sunday was no exception.

The race was taken out by John’s Riocht clubmate Willie Reidy. His lead was short lived , how-ever, as John brushed past him on the first climb. The course descended through the forest from the top of the climb which suited Reidy admirably and he availed of the opportunity to regain the lead. The serious climb to the summit began at the end of the forestry and John was back on familiar territory. He reeled in Reidy for the last time and ran his own race there-after. A titanic battle started between between Sean Whelan, Willie Reidy and Richard O Donnell at this point. Whelan was running in 2nd place initially. O Donnell moved into 3rd and Reidy slotted in at 4th position. Reidy put in a trojan effort on the long descent from the summit and moved up to 2nd place. O Donnell showed that he had something in reserve on the last climb to the finish when he moved ahead again to regain the hotly contested slot which he held to the finish.

Maureen Foley of Bilboa took the ladies category with style on a time of 41.55 and announced afterwards that she was a convert to mountain running. Loretto Duggan of St Mary’s finished 2nd on a time of 45.22with the 3rd slot being filled by the delighted Judy Hanrahan of the host club. We saw superb performances from Junior Athletes Paul Lenihan of Riocht and Sam Hand of Kilmallock who finished 12th and 14th over-all respectively.

The event was organised by West Waterford AC and was very well supported by club members. Tim Foley and his team prepared and stewarded the course to the highest standard. Nora Healy recorded the positions and times and did the results. The Daly family of Bridgie Terries were again sponsors of the event. Tim Foley brought in a large chilled cabinet of sandwiches. We thank them one and all. It was a day to remember.
