John Lenihan shaken but not stirred in Glounageenty
Report by Matt Twomey
The presence of the ultra competitive Paul Nolan of R.D.A. made for very exciting racing in the recent final race of the Munster Championship in Glounageenty. Race organiser and defending champion John Lenihan and his co-workers must be congratulated on producing a superb new course that was extremely well marked and marshalled. This course was once again unique in Munster terms as it was run over a section of the organiser?s farm,
A determined Nolan led Lenihan strongly for the first two and a half miles and opened up a 60 metre gap of a lead but was eventually over-taken by the former World Champion on the lane-way to his own home. It was a case of "how dare you do this to me on my home patch" as Lenihan kicked and was not bothered again for the duration, finishing on a time of 32:25 with Nolan 2nd on a time of 33:15.
A big battle developed for third place between Gerry Brady of B.V.O.C. and John Feehan of Ajax Orienteers with Feehan leading most of the way. He received a rude awakening however at the 4 mile stage, when Brady blazed past and held the pace to finish in 3rd position on 34:14.
Fergal Fitzmaurice of Ballyduff had no peers in the Junior Boys when he came home a clear winner on 37:04 ahead of young James Doran of Riocht A.C. on 39:59 with Tim Feehan of B.V.O.C. filling 3rd place on 52:09.
Mick McAuliffe of Riocht A.C. was first of the veteran men home on a time of 38:17 with Kevin Grogan of Rathfarnham 2nd on 39:24 and Pat Murphy of Eagle A.C. in 3rd place on 39:39.
Ted Feehan of B.V.O.C. had a comfortable victory in the SuperVet Category with winning on a time of 49:50 with Tom Bree of Sligo 2nd on 54:52 and Mossy Kelleher of Star of Laune A.C. finishing 3rd on 75:13.
Eithne McShane (U/A) was the first Senior Lady home on 49:20, followed home by Miriam Feehan of B.V.O.C. on 52:59. Julie Hilliard of I.M.R.A. was the first Veteran Lady home on 58:10 ahead of Catherine Mannix-Heady of Alaska on 70:00.
