Nagles Race

The unburstable John Lenihan of Riocht A.C. had been under doctor?s orders since his leg injury to take time out but to no avail. He presented himself for the Nagles event on Sunday 21st May 2000 with the usual broad smile as he eyed his rivals. He was advised by friends to take things easy but after being strapped up by nurse Edel Mooney he was chaffing at the bit.
He led out the field in his usual determined manner with Bernard Feery of St. Catherines A.C. and Tadhg Vaughan of Coolquil A.C. chasing. The steely Feery gave it his all but he was still trailing the former World Champion by 120 metres at the mast with Vaughan tucking in behind him. A trailing pack included Mick McAuliffe (Riocht A.C.), Mark Baker(Raheny) ,Willie Guiney (Desmond Currans A.C.) and Keith Ryan of Limerick A.C. Lenihan just did enough on the descent to stay ahead of Baker who was putting all of his experience to good use.
Edel Mooney (Raheny) was first lady at the mast with some 200 metres to spare on the Riocht pair Mary Lenihan and Ailish Brosnan. She maintained this safe lead to finish on 31:28 from Mary Lenihan on 33:51 with Ailish Brosnan 3rd on 33:59.
There was a cracker of a race for the Junior honours with Martin Bradshaw of Bilboa A.C. taking the honours on 30:00 from Niall Bourke of U.C.C. 2nd on 30:22 with Alan Barry also of U.C.C. finishing 3rd place on 30:26.
