Crohaun - Report by Tim Foley
The inaugural running of the Crohaun hill race (locally known as Cruachain) was won by Junior Cross-Country international William Harty (KCK). The 6.5 mile race climbs and descends the route to the 484 metre summit of the mountain - the most southerly outlier of the Comeraghs - which commands magnificent views of the sunny south eastern corner of Ireland and especially Dungarvan Harbour
Running on home territory in glorious sunshine over terrain that he frequently trains on, the Waterford runner had 11 seconds to spare over George Lonergan from Raheny who had only clinched his place on the Irish senior team for the Worlds in Italy a couple of weeks previously. While this may have ranked as a surprise at national level, any other result would have been a surprise in Waterford.
The Raheny man, to be fair, put up a very stiff challenge and was still with young Harty at the summit of Cruachain. Indeed, it was only on the last few miles that William managed to make a break. William?s father Anthony came home in third place and secured the first veteran?s spot. Tadhg Vaughan of Coolquil was fourth.
There was a small field in the race due to an unfortunate clash with West Waterford Athletic Club?s participation in the final of the Mazda League in Tullamore. This fact also made it difficult for the host club to secure stewards on the day, but the organisers are delighted that the event is up and running and are confident that it will become an established event in the mountain running calendar.
