2001 Munster Championship Race
Slievenamon - Preliminary report by Douglas Barry
International junior cross country runner William Harty won the Slievenamon race on Sunday the 15th July 2001 ahead of his younger brother Philip. The Waterford pair were taking part in their first mountain race and showed a natural flair for the descent.
According to third placed former Irish international Martin McDonald, the Waterford lads set off like men possessed from the start at the scenic village of Kilcash. However, Slievenamon is not an easy race and bites back. It bit them hard. They were reduced to a walk as the climb steepened.
Martin admitted that he is nowhere near the form that made him so formidable on the climbs in earlier years, but was still able to pass the two younger runners and reached the summit cairn first. He turned with a slight lead, but was passed shortly afterwards as the Hartys flew down, and had to settle for third overall and first vet.
Blaithin Hannon won the women's race in the calm conditions with Julie Hilliard the first vet. Bernard Collins won the over 50s class while the incredible John Forde took the 0ver 70 section. All of the runners were greeted by mist on the summit with the exception of the under 15s winner Shane Corcoran who had a shorter course to contend with.
The records for the 8 kilometre race with its 591 metres of climb and descent are as follows.
Men: John Lenihan 33.55
Women: Veronica Colleran 42.12
