2001 Leinster League
Portmarnock - Report by Mike Gomm
Beach race due to Foot and Mouth restrictions
A mountain run in Portmarnock? A nonsense! But this was planned during the F&M crisis as a possible fallback and the IMRA committee decided to stay with it. The course had trail running on grass, some work on undulating dunes, some good running on hard sand, and some work on the softer gravelly beach around the headland. With all the undulations we managed 40 metres height gain mostly when climbing on the soft sand.
We got a very accurate 5 mile course using a wheel calibrated by NSAI ! Many thanks to Seamus Kilcullen who assisted in the design and marking of the course and to Eric Carroll and Ken Newman who assisted with stewarding on the night. The weather in the hours leading up to the race was atrocious and, of course, we also had to contend with the Ireland soccer match.
49 runners made it to the start and the first man home was Aenghus O'Cleirigh who was also the first 0/40 vet. 2nd place was also an 0/40 namely Michael Burton from Bondi Running and Triathlon. Eoin Keith from Setanta took 3rd, Stephen Lynch took first 0/50, and Mick Kellet was first 0/60. In the ladies, Emma Sokell was 1st , Joan Flanagan was first 0/40, and Jane Watt was first 0/50. Brendan O'Reilly won the U10 juniors. Fionan O'Muircheartaigh had a great run to win the M15 category.
The "Apres Course" took place at the White Sands Hotel which provided some nice bottles as spot prizes courtesy of Eddie Harrison. Many thanks to our course officials and to all participants! It is hoped to retain this event for the year 2002. This course is only fully available at certain states of the tide so many thanks to Stephen Rowe who provided the tidal information during the planning stage.
