Nagles Mountain
A summary of a quick telephone conversation between Douglas Barry and John Lenihan
DB: Hi John, I was just looking at the results of the Nagles. It must have been a hard one?
JL: I felt like I had been run over by a JCB this morning, Douglas. I got a fright. Niall Duncan and Simon Fairmaner, the pair of them pushed me very hard all the way.
DB: Tell me all.
JL: From the gun, I headed off to the summit at what I thought was a brisk pace. I was conscious of Niall and Simon tracking me. After a while, they came alongside me and then, either they pushed harder, or I eased. Anyway, they passed me out and started to battle each other on the climb. I was beginning to think I might be in serious trouble when I suddenly noticed I was gaining ground back on Simon. Eventually, I passed him again and started to close up on Niall. I passed him before the summit, but didn't really drop either of them.
DB: Third place is an unusual place for you in an Irish mountain race, John. I suppose you pulled away from then on?
JL: Not a bit of it. I seemed to be in low gear just after the summit turn. Niall came flying past me on the initial descent and pulled out 50 metres on me. Then Simon came past me and I thought I'd better do something about this quickly. I forced my pace and tagged along behind him. I repassed him and began to gradually close down on Niall. With a bout a mile to go, I drew level again and passed him for the lead. From there on, I felt safe, but, without a doubt, it was my toughest race of the year, and Niall is a great prospect for the future. I'll have to watch out!!
