Killiney Hill Relay - 18 April 2001Report by Doug Corrie
Despite the continuing foot and mouth crisis, the IMRA ?summer? season kicked off on a chilly Killiney Hill with the traditional season opener - the relay race. Due to the F&M restrictions still in place, it was not possible to use the usual venue - the Hell Fire Woods. Killiney proved a great substitute and was received favourably by most of the 39 runners turning up for the race. (Maybe a good venue for the same time next year?? - despite the usual problems of moving race markers!!).
As usual, the teams were randomly drawn and, with 39 runners available, this made up 13 teams (although one team opted to run non-competitively). It was a dry evening, but there was a bitterly cold northerly wind, so the first leg runners were envied because of their chance to get moving and raise the body temperature. The race route was interesting because at one point it passes close to the start/finish area and allows the teams to cheer on their runners while waiting for the hand over.
First to appear through the trees to the hand over point (in a time of 10:37) was Mike Burton. Mike, who hails from Australia, may be unfamiliar to some but was a competitor with us on the hills back in 1997. He hopes to run with us this season again. From here on, the action was fast and furious until all of the second leg runners got underway. The first of these to arrive back was Emma Sokell (12:20) who took over from Eamon Horgan (11:01) running the first leg for his team. Between them they made it easy for their last runner Paul Mahon who also put in a sub 11 min run with a time of 10:52 and was to clinch first place for that team in a total time of 34:13.
Mike Burton?s efforts did not go to waste however and his team-mates, Murtagh Murphy (13:23) and Dessie Shorten (11:40) went on to capture second place for the team in a time of 35:40.
Third team on the podium, with solid runs, was John Fitzgerald (13:57), Doug Corrie (11:50) and Beth McCluskey (11:31) in a total of 37:18.
Fresh from the finish of the Marathon de Sables were Jane Watt and Graham Porter, running tonight on different teams. In fact, Jane ended up on the first all ladies team to cross the line at Killiney. Her team mates were Eva Mulleady and Joan Flanagan who were awarded first all ladies team prize and finished in a time of 40:27.
On a team further down the field was the fastest runner on the night, Hugh McLindon who did the lap in 10:19.
Next Race - the Goal Flash - also relocated - from Lamb Doyle?s/ Three Rock to Dollymount Strand.
This is an opportunity for those of you who love mountain running but hate the climbing. The total climb in this race is zero meters.
Please come along and support the race - all entry fees (and donations) go to Goal.
Meet at Junction of James Larkin Rd (commonly known as Clontarf Rd.) and new Causeway Road. Race starts 7.30.
