Despite the bad weather of late, the 64 runners who took to Corrin Hill yesterday were greated with ideal running conditions. The course route was just under 5km in length, taking in 200m of climb. The route started with a steep uphill section up to the cross, where runners were rewarded with a long downhill section along a forest road before entering the forest on trails at the foot of the hill. Unfortunately for these racers, what goes down must come up, with a long drag up to the finish, those familiar with the route were able to factor this into their race tactics! The short distance and long downhill sections lead to some very impressive times. The top three spots were divided by just 15 seconds. Noel Berkeley held on to take the honours in this race, with Mike Curley Cunningham hot on his heels. Sarah McCormack entered the finishing straight just seconds behind Curley, rounding off the top 3 and taking the women's honours at the same time. Kealan O'Connor took third spot in the men's battle. Carol Finn and Laura Schwirz rounded off the women's leader board in second and third place respectively.
In the juniors race, Joe Bosonnet and Tiernan Morrissey had to fight hard against one another over the 2km course, resulting in the closest finish of the day. Joe just pipped Tiernan at the post, with only 1 second separating the two warriers.
Well done to all runners who took part. Photos from the event can be found on our Facebook page: The next race is Sunday 23rd Feb in Kilworth Woods at 11am. More details to follow closer to the date.
