2001 Knockree Winter League Race
Report by Doug Corrie
Simon Walters (M40) took the overall honours and Majella Diskin (F40) was first overall in the women’s category at Knockree on another frosty Sunday afternoon.
It looks like the crisp winter air and the nice little uphill jaunt at the end of this race brought out the best in the mountain running veterans this week. As well as veterans taking the first overall positions in the men’s and women’s categories, second overall in the race and classified as first vet, (figure that one out!), was Desie Shorten. His time of 26 minutes was almost a full 3 minutes faster than his time on this race in the warmth of last August. In fact 5 of the top 10 finishers in Sunday’s race were veterans. Third placed man (and amazingly not a vet) was newcomer Joakim Safllund.
The second lady home this week was Emma Sokell – just behind Diskin and Jane Watt, now eligible to compete as a Super Vet, was classified as first lady vet.
Graham Porter again took the first male Super Vet position with Diarmuid O’Colmain second and Mick Kellet was again first M60.
In the junior classes on the long course the first boy home was Brendan Murphy and the first girl home was Deirdre Hopkins. On the short course, Fionan O’Muircheartaigh, taking after his brother Seosamh, was first boy and Siobhan Murphy was first girl.
Further down the field, Henny Brandsma was running again, making his comeback to fitness as was Ray Linn who took a year out last year.
There were 51 runners on the long course and 3 on the short course.
