Shane Enright | Mar 31 2010, 12:45pm | Any update on the route for this? |
Jason Kehoe | Mar 31 2010, 2:23pm | I've emailed Niamh today looking for same. Was thinking of a Recce this Monday if anyone was interested? Not sure about the weather though its supposed to be heavy showers! |
Paul Nolan | Apr 1 2010, 8:47am | The route is very straightforward. Starting at Wicklow Gap it's straight up to the top of Tonelagee, from there it's an anticlockwise lap of Lough Iolar returning to the top and straight back down to Wicklow Gap. Regards, Paul (course designer) |
niamh o ceallaigh | Apr 1 2010, 11:56am | Map now up |
Brendan Lawlor | Apr 1 2010, 11:59am | Climbing Tonlagee once a year is bad enough, but now you're making us do it twice in one race - Paul Nolan, you're a masochist! |
Jason Kehoe | Apr 6 2010, 3:48pm | Couple of us did the recce last night. Wow...what a fantastic run! One my favourite runs to date and great craic! Well done Paul, fast and furious in the muck, slop and wind, just as I like it! I'd be interested to see the optimal race route from an experienced guy like yourself (probably involves absailing maybe?). Oh, friendly piece of advice for others, if you didnt notice the contour lines on the map, mind the cliff edge! ;) |
Ronan Hickey | Apr 9 2010, 10:48am | Hi Niamh, I've signed up as a volunteer. If I can I'd like to run the race as I swore that I would do at least one Leinster Championship race this year but if you're stuck then I can switch to being a non-runner. |
Paul Nolan | Apr 12 2010, 2:14pm | Jason If I was running the race I'd make sure to use the tiny path up from Wicklow Gap. From the car park scan the slopes of Tonelagee, about 150/200 metres from the road there is a single wooden post. It makes a good point to use to pick up that path. On the first descent I'd follow the walkers path down beside the cliffs until the flat stoney piece of ground. From there contour around the left of the little climb for a bit (there are sheep tracks) before turning straight down to the lake. This keeps the deep heather time to a minimum and gets you beyond the rocks. Running along the lake shore isn't too bad. Hopefully the weather will be fine on the day, as the view up the second climb is a stunning one. |
John Greene | Apr 21 2010, 2:22pm | i hiked the route this morning, it's spectacular. i don't have a compass or whistle, is this mandatory if you know the route relatively well? thanks |
Ronan Hickey | Apr 21 2010, 4:54pm | John, Obviously the RD, Niamh, has the last word but the whistle and compass are mandatory kit for the race. I have a spare whistle and compass if you want which I can bring along for you on the day. I'm a running volunteer so I'll be there fairly early. Ronan P.S. And I promise I won't pull the old "Give him the remagnetised compass schtick". Although maybe I'll check your usual placings... :-) |
Jason Kehoe | Apr 21 2010, 5:37pm | @Paul - Thanks for the advice Paul, if the weather holds up it will be spectacular. I also hear there is another longer but maybe more run friendly route slightly further to the right of the lake. And after all the hype I dont think I'll be able to run it after all. Serving on the frontlines of WAR took it out of me. Will have to make a call on the morning. :( @Ronan Hickey in the carpool list - Just noticed your route is via Roundwood. This is the long way round from Glasnevin unless you have a reason to go to Roundwood. Best bet is getting off at the Tallaght or Firhouse exit. Put it into Google maps. Glasnevin -> Wicklow Gap. |
Kevin O'Riordan | Apr 21 2010, 5:44pm | Roundwood is the way I normally go when travelling from Glasnevin. Only a few km in the difference and less frustrating roads in my opinion. (Life's too short for the N81). |
Jason Kehoe | Apr 21 2010, 6:08pm | OK Kevin you found me out! I was going to try for a seat with Ronan if I was running and I live in Tallaght! But the important factor is that it's shorter! :) BTW there have been plans in the pipeline for quite a while to upgrade the N81 to some form of motorway from Tallaght to Hollywood and it will also bypass Blessington. Not sure of construction dates as yet though but they were sending proposed bypass routes of Blessington to homeowners a few weeks ago. It's currently a death trap especially for cyclists and on winter nights. |
John Greene | Apr 21 2010, 11:21pm | thanks Ronan. i may need a cowbell and a parachute too. Sat may be pushing the boat out a bit for me, though i just wanna get around running for the most part! |
aidan roe | Apr 22 2010, 9:48am | jason, I'm passing through blessington on saturday morning. if you can make it from tallaght to there on sat morning I'll get you up and back. I know the 65 isn't very regular. its up to yourself. |
Ronan Hickey | Apr 22 2010, 11:35am | @Jason: I'm happy to nip off the M50at Tallaght and pick you up on Saturday. You can do the navigating from there through to the race and I'll get to see this shorter route of yours! Throw me an email (my email address is on my profile) and we can sort out where and when to pick you up. I'll change my carpool to indicate we're hitting Tallaght. Any other D24 heads out there need a lift? @John, I'll bring them along anyway just in case. This is going to be my first unmarked race myself so I hear ya on the pushing the boat out! |
Niamh O'Ceallaigh | Apr 23 2010, 8:50am | The forecast looks good for the race tomorrow at Tonelegee and the Lake. Please remember the mandatory kit of route map, compass, whistle and raincoat. These will need to be carried regardless of the weather. IMRA will be providing sandwiches after the race at the Glendalough Hotel. Registration will be open from 11.00 till 11.50 at the Wicklow Gap car park. Thanks, Niamh Race Director |
niamh o ceallaigh | Apr 23 2010, 3:54pm | A slight change of plan. Prizegiving and sandwiches will now be at the finish line at the Wicklow Gap. Due to the dry forecast, it will be nice for people to hang around the finish, watching the other finishers hurtling down the side of Tonelegee to the finish line. This will also be handier for people coming from West Wicklow side. Sandwiches and drinks will be provided by IMRA, but I suggest you bring plenty of warm clothes and perhaps something to sit on. Niamh |
Mick Hanney | Apr 24 2010, 2:42pm | What a day, what a race, what a location. Thanks Niamh and helpers for a great event. A classic route (thanks Paul Nolan for the initial idea) and a time by Brian Furey that will take some beating. |
Dermot Murphy | Apr 24 2010, 3:08pm | Just to echo Mick's words - great race today on a super route and well organised by Niamh - the sandwiches, biscuits, tea and coffee afterwards gave a great post race atmosphere. Well done to Brian on his second Leinster Championship race win on the trot - he should be hot favourite to win the Leinster crown this year. Only downside was the lack of female runners - come on ladies, ye missed a good one today! |
caitlÃn Bent | Apr 24 2010, 5:44pm | I am deeply hurt Dermot:). Did'nt you notice 2 Women running the race today, me included. I really enjoyed the smaller crowd and met some new people. Go raibh maith agat Niamh and of course Henny at the summit. |
Dermot Murphy | Apr 24 2010, 5:56pm | Caitlin - yes I did know there was two of you there - just a pity it wasn't more! |
Dan Morrogh | Apr 24 2010, 6:35pm | Really great race- thank you Niamh, and all the other helpers (And sandwich makers) too! |
Paul Joyce | Apr 24 2010, 7:06pm | If you could distill the spirit of IMRA down to basics, it would look something very like today's race. Hard runners at the front, battles throughout the field, and a sense of achievement at the end at having completed a great course. Well done to Niamh, and to all involved. |
aidan roe | Apr 24 2010, 7:55pm | trying not to labour the point but I have to concur with the lads (& lass's). a super race (even from the back) and the post race snacks were a treat. it meant I could hit the couch as soon as I got home for some well earned zzzzzzzz's. many thanks Niamh & crew.and thanks also 2 Henny |
Shane Enright | Apr 24 2010, 8:03pm | I know this is like a stuck record but thanks once again to Niamh and her crew for doing a super job today. Thanks to Paul as well for coming up with a great route, lots of room to overtake (and be overtaken!) which is what it's all about. |
Mick Hanney | Apr 24 2010, 8:25pm | A 2nd lap around the lake next year ;-) |
Ronan Hickey | Apr 24 2010, 8:53pm | This is turning into a bit of a love-fest on the forum here but wanted to say that was my first ever unmarked race and I loved it!! Thanks Niamh, Henny and all the gang! Ro |
Alan Ayling | Apr 24 2010, 11:09pm | " If you could distill the spirit of IMRA down to basics, it would look something very like today's race. Hard runners at the front, battles throughout the field, and a sense of achievement at the end at having completed a great course. Well done to Niamh, and to all involved." Well said Paul. Sums today up perfectly. And Ronan, perhaps we have found the answer to all our woes - stop marking race routes!! |
Alan Ayling | Apr 24 2010, 11:11pm | Oh and Shane, overtaking is well and good, but would ya ever pick on someone else to overtake next time?! ;-) |
Moire O'Sullivan | Apr 25 2010, 1:26am | "Only downside was the lack of female runners - come on ladies, ye missed a good one today!" If its any consolation Dermot, I would have been there yesterday to boost the ladies' numbers - sounded like a great race and perfect route. Had to content myself with a run in the Kathmandu Valley instead :) Hope you're all keeping well. |
John Greene | Apr 25 2010, 9:55am | tthanks to Niamh, & thanks to Ronan for the compass/whistle...and thank God for that downhill finish! |

Colm Hill | Apr 26 2010, 7:03pm | Race seemed to be pretty epic! Pity it was on the same weekend as a whole host of other races |
