Phil Jefferies | Jul 14 2025, 9:45am | I've volunteered for this one. Let me know if I can help. Cheers, Phil |
Phil Jefferies | Jul 14 2025, 9:47am | Also, you say it counts for the Galway league, but it's not listed on the league page. Is it a replacement for the cancelled Mt Gable? |
Liam Vines | Jul 14 2025, 10:02am | Thanks for pointing that out Phil. Yes Nephin is replacing Mt Gable in the Galway league. Galway league updated Thanks again.. |
Aidan Cleary | Jul 14 2025, 10:29am | Volunteers Needed – Nephin IMRA Race (Joint NW/Galway Event) Hi all, We’re currently short on volunteers for the upcoming Nephin race this weekend, which is a joint NW and part of the Galway League. Entries are now open for the race |
Brían O'Meara | Jul 14 2025, 12:25pm | Folks, event page at the top has an 11.00 start time, but the details below has a 12.00 start time. that may need to be clarified, thanks. |
Turlough Conway | Jul 14 2025, 5:33pm | Changed from earlier thanks Brian. Event start is 11 am. |
Liam Vines | Jul 15 2025, 5:21pm | Going for a change in the route for this year. It’s a mix of the league race route and the Championship route. Route will still start in the forest and head up the trail to the summit. There are some very rough steep sections on the clime to the top so full attention and care is needed. And your grapiest runners. From the top it all changes. You will be continuing on around the bowl and down the very steep grassy decent on the other side. After you have ran or slid down you will have to negotiate a small river gorge and make your way back to the forest edge. There are no paths along some of this, but it will be fully marked with Yellow and red IMRA tape or flags. To say that it is an exciting decent is an understatement. It will be very important to check yourself and your children for Ticks after this event as it is the time of the year for them. There will be a short/junior course its not fully worked out yet, but we will try and make it as exciting as possible. This is a Northwest and a Galway League, so we hope to see plenty of competitive running in all categories. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday morning and if you are on the fence about traveling to take part, I guarantee you the decent from the top will be worth it no matter where you are coming from. |
David Dinsmore | Jul 15 2025, 9:43pm | Following on from last year's successful prizegiving we are this year repairing to the other pub in the village, Murphy's, for soup, tea and sandwiches. Any of you who have been before will know that parking is minimal at the start so please share where possible and use the verges at the ruined house on the left about 400m from the carpark and the longer verge on the right about 50m further on. There will be a marshal to guide you. Please take care on this road as it's very narrow and may have farm and other traffic. If you want a souvenir of your ascent give your name to the staff at the supermarket and they'll give you a certificate. They normally ask for a selfie from the summit but they'll trust IMRA members |
Phil Jefferies | Jul 16 2025, 1:41pm | The general volunteering page says to get in touch with the RD via contact details on the event page, but I can't see any contact details listed. |
Liam Vines | Jul 17 2025, 6:05pm | Nephin race page is updated. Everything you need to know should be on it!!! This is a proper mountain race don’t let the short distance fool you. Nephin is the tallest stand alone mountain in Ireland it’s just over 800m tall and you have to climb 750 of them meters to get to the top all in about 2.5k Caution is needed on the climb with some loose rocky sections to navigate ..But what goes up must come down. A classic steep grassy downhill is your prize for getting to the top. So get booked in Nephin is an hour from Sligo and an hour and a half from Galway. Race entry closes on Saturday at 6pm |
Liam Vines | Jul 19 2025, 8:56am | Last day to enter the Nephin race. Entry closes at 6pm today.. Remember it’s a Northwest and Galway league race.. See you in the morning.. |
Eoin Syron | Jul 19 2025, 6:48pm | Route has been marked. After passing the top keep the corrie to the left, at the three stone mounds keep left. There are flags and tape along the way and they get closer when the route turns. After coming down the heathery steep descent follow the tape keeping above the the steep gorge. After crossing the stream the route turns right to a fence and follows the fence back to join the path and come back through the path in the forest. |
Liam Vines | Jul 19 2025, 9:08pm | Small enough numbers for the morning but its going to be a cracking run around Nephin. Bring all of your Level B kit... What you have to carry will be decided in the morning. See you all in Lahardane in the morning. |
Brían O'Meara | Jul 20 2025, 2:57pm | Spectacular race, lads. Thanks for organising. |
Alan Dunne | Jul 20 2025, 3:46pm | Best route in the country surely! Thanks to all to ensure it went ahead, blessed with the weather and volunteers. Had a great morning, thanks again |
Rosy Temple | Jul 20 2025, 6:06pm | A brilliant race and route! Thank you to the whole race team for putting on a cracking event; with a calf burner ascent and free flow downhill over rocks and heather with a patchwork of counties spread out far and wide below. Super well marked and lovely soup and sandwiches in the village after. A top day out, thank you v much. |
Barry McAuley | Jul 20 2025, 7:56pm | Thank you to all the fantastic volunteers, organisers and others that helped make today's event so great. A great day |
Liam Vines | Jul 20 2025, 10:57pm | Check yourself for ticks…… Then check yourself again. What a great day out. When I asked Clare to travel across the country with me to do first aid for the race today, I promised her Breakfast her tea and a swim in a lake. We had a breakfast roll from Centra on the way over and a Burger King on the way back, but we swam in Lough Cullin worth the trip all by itself. Well done to our winners today Rose Susan Beth And Alan John Peter Thank you to all the volunteers for turning up and letting this race go ahead today. Nephin is a big mountain but a mountain running hidden gem. The talk at the finish line and back in the pub was all about how super a route it is. Get the word out. Its worth the trip. Locally and regionally let’s find a way to grow this event. Thank you all for running today. Nephin will be there next year, will you? |
Turlough Conway | Jul 21 2025, 10:59am | Thanks a million to all the volunteers for this event. Special thanks to Liam Vines who stepped up to RD this race when it was in doubt and to Clare Keeley for also filling the vital role of First Aid. Liam, as with all the committee does trojan work. He is a great help behind the scenes as IMRA race coordinator for the NW leagues and all the leagues. I saw Clare volunteering on Carnawaddy also just a few days before so much appreciation for her also for volunteering a long day coming from the East to make the event happen! |
