Turlough Conway | Jun 3 2025, 4:24pm | Slaibh Daeane mountain race taking place this Sunday just a few kms from Sligo Town. Beautiful and varied route taking in forest trails, the Sligo way and a suprisingly open mountain ascent given the altitude. The reason the rounded "Two Birds" mountain top is so wild: from Yeats describing the Devils mother. " “went all over the world, seeking a lake deep enough to drown her faery life, of which she had grown weary, leaping from hill to hill, and setting up a cairn of stones wherever her feet lighted, until, at last, she found the deepest water in the world in little Lough Ia, on the top of the bird mountain, in Sligo.” Sensing the supernatural danger no sheep has ever crossed the Sligo Way and set foot on the mountain proper giving it its wilderness feel. The sheep instead choosing to run bleating in the oppositite direction while often simultanrously 'lighetning their load'. Derek Hunter will be along with more detail shortly! |
Derek Hunter | Jun 3 2025, 11:17pm | Rory Connor has assessed course given storm damage etc. Just relatively small changes made but I think they are real enhancements. The first section of forest trail is now slightly longer and you come out directly on to the Sligo Way path. This means you avoid a previously boggy area so this should speed you up. Likewise on the decent you stay on the forest trail section a little longer and avoid a run in the rhododendron and ferns. Coilte have also upgraded the path home and with no detours after you leave the forest the last few kilometres should be the fastest section of the course. With these tweaks actually makes for a really interesting short course. Thanks Rory |
Phil Jefferies | Jun 8 2025, 9:44pm | Thanks for organising a great race today. If anyone picked up a pair of shoes, I managed to leave mine over the road from the car park near the gate. Would be great to get them back if possible! |
