Elaine Casey | Sep 2 2024, 7:42am | Will there be a shorter option for this? Similar to Nav 1? Thanks. |
Joe Lalor | Sep 2 2024, 9:56am | Yes, shorter course NC3. Not naming start location yet as permit is pending. |
Joe Lalor | Sep 10 2024, 5:12pm | The venue for NC3, 13th October will be the upper lake car park Glendalough. Please note there is a €5 parking fee. To avoid this you could park for free at new car park near Derrybawn House and jog up the green road or park there and car pool up and share the cost. |
Joe Lalor | Sep 30 2024, 11:40pm | Ready to go again? Long course involves open mountain and tough climbs. Short course confined to forest and should not pose any problems. Event map East/West Glendalough Lugnaquilla 25k seriess. Note there are several significant changes to newer edition, some of which are relevant to course. If using older edition (2018) edition see map corrections before race. There are also a number of uncrossable deer fences that are not on map which effect route choice, again see map corrections board. |
Joe Lalor | Oct 3 2024, 4:42pm | Looking for volunteer to cover first aid role for this one. |
Alan Ayling | Oct 4 2024, 7:06am | I put myself in for that Joe |
Joe Lalor | Oct 6 2024, 6:40pm | Area covered by course 070980 120940 In deciding which course to do consider the following. Some might consider the short course not too challenging (~7.5km). I am constrained by uncrossable fences and desire to stay off very steep ground. The long course (~15km) will be physically demanding but nav should be (weather permitting) fairly straightforward. It has 8 controls, 4 on each side of Glendalough Valley, with a mandatory crossing of the Gleneola River by the footbridge. Anyone trying the LC (clockwise or anticlockwise) who has had enough or run out of time (course closes 3pm) can come down the Miner's Track for SC credit. See photo on event page re Spink path closure. |
Elaine Casey | Oct 6 2024, 10:26pm | Does anyone have a copy of the course map they could bring on the day? I have other maps and of course none of them are the correct one! Urgh |
Joe Lalor | Oct 6 2024, 10:44pm | Elaine, I will have several master maps, you may have one of them when everyone has taken down their .course |
Paul Smyth | Oct 7 2024, 12:51am | Hi Joe, Is there a newer version of the map than 2018? The EW website says the map was published in Apr. 2018? You seem to be indicating that the 2018 map is an older edition. Just looking to clarify. |
Joe Lalor | Oct 7 2024, 8:48am | Hi Paul, There is a 2021 edition. I just bought 2 copies for this event but they don't have the changes that are on the digital version. However I will have a few maps corrections available relevant to event. |
Elaine Casey | Oct 7 2024, 10:52am | Thanks Jo |
Con Halpin | Oct 9 2024, 7:58pm | Hey guys, sorry I'm just wondering if you are looking for more volunteers? If not no worries. |
Joe Lalor | Oct 9 2024, 9:04pm | Hi Colin, thanks for offer. Low tech event. I have a role for you out on the course if interested in a hike. No problem if you preferred to be based in car park, will find something for you to do. |
Con Halpin | Oct 10 2024, 8:31pm | Great stuff thanks Joe, yeah always up for a hike. chat to you then . |
Clare Keeley | Oct 12 2024, 5:51pm | Hi everyone, two items from “lost and found” from Nav 2 will be with Liam tomorrow at Nav 3. There was a specific brand pair of gloves and a specific brand compass. The stove and kettle have been handed over too so bring your mugs. Have fun tomorrow! Clare |
Joe Lalor | Oct 12 2024, 7:19pm | All set for tomorrow. Car park was busy at 9.30 this morning, come early or buddy up. Taped jacket mandatory (will be checked), there were heavy showers and hail there today. I see we have a few entries for new IMRA members, so just a reminder that for this event only nav aid is map and compass (no GPS or phone maps). Could all please read previous post as this is obvious not been done See you tomorrow, bring a cup. |
Elaine Casey | Oct 13 2024, 7:47pm | Thanks to Joe and all the volunteers, and lovely food afterwards. My first Nav challenge and definitely not my last, really enjoyed it! I hope you had as much 'fun' placing the CPs Joe as we did trying to find them! |
Laura-Anne Molloy | Oct 13 2024, 9:26pm | A huge thank you to Joe and team for a brilliant end to the navigation races for this year, today was great fun. My first year doing the nav league, lots learnt and I've really enjoyed every one of the days out. It's a huge effort from the RDs to put these together and it's really appreciated. A special thanks to Nora for the exceptional spread when we finished, really delicious. Looking forward to next year already. |

Andy Keeling | Oct 13 2024, 10:05pm | Big thanks to Joe and crew today and indeed all of the other rds and crews from the Navs. So, so enjoyable. Always learning from these events. Great craic altogether. |
Joe Lalor | Oct 13 2024, 11:50pm | The results for the combined score of the three races are . John Bell 7.23 Paul Mahon 8.38 Mike Jordan 8.42 Therefore John is yet again Navigator of the Year Remarkable these were the only runners to finish the series. Several others did three races but were recorded in short course in NC2. Special mention should be made of Stuart Scott and Liam Vines who would most likely have finished the series had they not given up their race to act as RD. This series is the only one in the calendar which is gender neutral and as yet there is no award of navigator of the year in the short course. For the record the top three scorers were. Brian Farren 4.55 Mick Hanney 4.59 Derek Hay 6.08 |
Mike Jordan | Oct 14 2024, 8:33am | A huge thank you to Stuart, Liam, Joe and all their volunteers for putting on the nav challenge series this year. Mountain running is a niche, mountain running unmarked routes without digital aids is a niche within it, and mountain running unmarked routes without digital aids without knowing the route in advance is a niche within that again. It's clearly not a challenge that suits everybody's tastes but for the nichest of niche mountain runners who like to get off the beaten track these are often the most enjoyable and memorable races in the hills every year. I'd encourage anyone to show up and try a short course next year - at a minimum you'll get an experience out of it. If you are interested, chat to me or any of the nav regulars and we'll set you in the right direction (pun alert). Congratulations to John on winning the series and every race. I had mentioned to some people recently that I thought the nav series is determined by accumulative time rather than position - Joe has confirmed my memory isn't quite as poor as I thought. It leaves me in the position of being both 3rd and last in the series despite finishing ahead of Paul in 2 races :) That said I do think given the nature of the events, total time is the fairest way to determine the series. Lastly, thanks to all the runners. These are races but everyone participating will always take a second to point someone in the right direction of a control or give a shout when a group is hunting for an errant boulder. The pre-race is always a friendly gathering and the post-race is always full of tales of highs and low, joys and woes, as everyone has experienced the same challenge, they just all experienced it a bit differently. |
John Bell | Oct 14 2024, 8:08pm | I posted a report on some of the adventures and misadventures on the Nav Series. Thanks to Joe, Liam, Stuart, and all the other volunteers for another great and challenging nav series. |
Rachel Cinnsealach | Oct 14 2024, 9:44pm | Thanks so much Joe and Nora and to all who volunteered for such a fabulous event. I had forgotten just how much fun the smaller weekend events are. I had forgotten how much fun it is looking for controls. I was reminded how lovely are the IMRA gang are, the most friendly inclusive group ever. #ILoveIMRA. I'm just sorry I missed the other two nav challenges now. |
Joe Lalor | Oct 15 2024, 9:44am | Glendalough/Lugnaquilla map (encapsulated version) left behind on Sunday. |
